I haven't gotten to watch the Doctor Who NYE special yet, although to be fair I haven't seen anything since Donna got dumped back on Earth with her memories of the Doctor gone because that just pissed me off too much, but I do follow everybody else's spoilery reaction posts out of curiosity.

I will say this, though. What amuses me most, as someone who's a very casual DW fan at the most, is how the general reaction to Matt Smith so far is "Meh. I want MY Doctor back!" and a general hesitancy towards believing he'll be any good, because I distinctly recall David Tennant getting pretty much the EXACT same reaction after the regeneration into Ten. Heh.

I want MY Doctor back! That's been a constant since One left.

I experienced it first with Four. BLOND? THE DOCTOR IS NOT BLOND. HE DIED IN A SHED? THIS IS STUPID! I WANT MY DOCTOR BACK!

And the doubly amusing thing, of course, is that you can't tell squat about a new Doctor from first impressions. HE doesn't know who he is yet! There's a reason he always has some equivalent of the "that's the kind of man I am" line at the END of every regen story.

Mind you, there are people still grousing about Eight who haven't yet twigged that, whatever the flaws of the TVM (and lo, they are legion), he's in regeneration crisis for basically the entire thing.

It's not nice to make snap judgments about the synaptically scrambled. But some people do seem to enjoy it an awful lot.

Oh, once Eight got his brain in gear he was wonderful. Let me wax poetic about the Big Finish Audios and Charlie? Best companion ever.

Wax awa!. I don't know if I'd call Charley the Best Companion Ever, but I'm pretty fond of her. And yes, the Eight of Big Finish is indeed a delight. And pretty much what Eight was intended to be, at least as Paul McGann understood it from dicussions at the time.

I also like how he was developed in the New Adventures, though not qutie as much.

The books were weird, I have one (Book of the lost?) and the author seems to have ramped up the vague, daydreaming amnesiac Eight way past eleven. There seems to be some sort of running joke about how he smells too, honey, flowers, that kind of thing.

They weren't all as bad as that one, but it did start to get on my nerves before he pieces came together about Faction Paradox messing with his timeline, and therefore with his identity. Which was interesting, but didn't take long to stop feeling like Who and start feeling like it really should be an original universe.

The books were always too dense for me to get into, they do come off as their own universes anyway.

I like the idea that all the separate media are loosely connected and similar but separate timelines, it stops so many arguments about OMG THAT'S NOT CANON. That way I can tootle along just listening to the stories I want to. :D

I found Four's death completely traumatizing and had nightmares when I was a kid. As an adult, I understand that the whole purpose of the show is to give little kids nightmares, and I am okay with that.

There's a reason for the jokes about watching the show from behind the couch! I definitely saw most of it that way.

Me too! I loved Four. Stupid blond doctor. Which is amusing since I've always preferred blond men. But not in a Doctor I guess. ;)

Hey man, don't look at me. Ten will always be My Doctor, but I'm totally on board for Eleven - bring him on!

I'm pretty sure that's the reaction to EVERY new Doctor. I also remember similar reactions to new companions, especially when Rose was replaced.

A lot of my friends have said they like the teases they've seen so far, and I'm generally ok with him. I mean, I know this is the internet, but I'm actually gonna *gasp* wait to see him in action before I judge. ;)

Nine was my favorite, but I am hesitant about Eleven mostly because of how emo his hair is. He shouldn't be the Doctor, he should be at a Fall Out Boy show.

:)

Long bangs do not emo hair make! His hair would be totally out of place at a Fall Out Boy show. Too poofy! It needs to be straightened and black, preferably with blue streaks. :)

I am still bitter and hurt about that.

And as a not casual at all fan, I am amused by the reactions about Matt Smith even as I experience them. I really didn't want to like Ten, I loved Nine you see and no one could be better! But I got over that pretty well. I figure I will with Eleven too. :D

I think it kind of endears me to him a great deal that Matt Smith seems like a nice guy who's genuinely and dorkily excited about being the Doctor. I know everybody's knocking on him for being a bit odd-looking but there was a lot of jokes being made about Ten's hair right after the regen, too, so ... yeah. :)

Oh I definitely appreciate his attitude. In fact, it was watching the uh...behind the scenes things for DW, hearing David talk about things, that first started turning me around on Ten. :D

I've been amused by that too. I mean, COME ON guys. Remember how David Tennant was just that zany dude with sticky-uppy hair that we were all highly suspicious of? Well look out that turned out! I've learned to keep an open mind because quite often, things surprise you, and usually because they're NOT what you're "hoping" for.

Prime example: I have a post in my journal saying how NERVOUS I was for season 2 of Supernatural. What if they ruin my show! Oh noes! ....cue my favorite season of television EVER. Hahaha. Oh self.

So, yes. Totally open mind on the Eleven front! I will miss Tennant terribly, of course.
