Betty Cooper is the girl you see on the beach surfs with the guys and scuba-dives and knows how to bait a hook. If there's something wrong with your car, she'll obligingly take a look at your engine and fix it, even if she's wearing a nice outfit and it gets smeared with engine grease. She also knits and makes her own clothes. She's the archetypal really nice, smart girl-next-door -- who almost always finishes last. The guys will hang out with her all day, swimming and surfing... then when the sun goes down, they'll go over to Veronica and beg her for a date.
Veronica Lodge is the kind of girl you see on the beach who wears a bathing suit that's so expensive, she can't get it wet; it's not for swimming in, it's for posing on a blanket for the gang of drooling boys hanging around her. She's got perfect make up on and her hair is perfectly coiffed. She's the archetypal spoiled rich girl who sees what she wants and always gets it, and she wants the best of everything. She's not really the "bad guy" per se -- she and Betty are rivals, but also best friends. If you need something run, like a charity or the school dance, she's the one who'll do it and do it efficiently, fairly, and well. When she grows up, she's going to be the CEO of Lodge Inc and she'll do a fabulous job of it.
When we were kids, I was a Betty fan and my sister was a Veronica fan. ;)
