Somebody remind me that I actually do have the ability to write. Because I'm starting to feel like I can't and it's really starting to upset the hell out of me.
Sometimes, as you progress in a complex skill, it just all comes apart on you for no reason. It will pass. This feeling that you can't write is, paradoxically, a sign that all the writing you've been doing is improving your skill at it.
Also, find ways to fill the well. I really like Julia Cameron's work; The Artist's Way is how I got through writing my first novel.
@Elorie - thank you for that - I'm struggling with my singing and that horrible insecurity that says "oh you only THOUGHT you could; but you know that really you can't.....why not stop struggling? think how much easier life would be if you did..." which is insidious and just...evil. I keep hearing about the Artist's Way book and think I had better get a copy post-haste.
@apocalypsos - if you identified with any of the above (and for me it seems to come on whenever I turn a corner in technique/achievement so in a weird perverted way it's sort of a good sign) then I hope you work your way through it soon - I love your writing, both your LJ and your fic. It's a pleasure to read....and I do not use that phrase lightly.
I hereby declare that I have in the past read and enjoyed your writing. I do not believe these writings or their quality to be fluked in any way. I very much look forward to the day a publisher pulls their head out of their cavernous arse and pays you for one so I can also pay money to read it myself. :)
You are a fucking awesome writer. Your SPN and CW RPS fics remain among my favourites.
And also? In the last month or so, I finally saw Veronica Mars (as in, I watched the whole series in a few weeks). I then went looking for fic. Honest to God, I was absolutely delighted to read some old rec lists and discover that you had written some VM fics. I don't always leave feedback on really old stories, but I really enjoyed them nevertheless!
I've loved everything I've read. You write for people with a brain, never oversimplifying something. Your words are chosen carefully, so that it never feels like a section is filler until you can get to the next important part. If your books are coming along as well as your fic, you're doing just fine. So breathe, walk yourself out of the tall grass, and enjoy that you have a job so that you can afford to write.
You'll get there.
(Cheerleadery enough for you? Happy writing!)
*eeps back behind the Wall of Lurk so I can convince myself of this, too.*
I have only ever read your fic, but I am always excited to do you. Your fics are among my favorite rereads, esp. the seduction of dr. badass. I love your sense of humor, your dialogue, and the way you develop your characters with a single sentence or phrase. In other words, don't give, get published, and I will buy your books!
I love your work - I think your stories are so amazingly creative and well-written. :-) We all get into a slump sometimes but sometimes even when you are not actually putting words down in paper, your brain is actually writing. Your fingers just haven't gotten with the program yet. Hope your brain and your fingers get aligned soon enough. Whatever you come up with is bound to be incredible. :-)
Tell me about it. *grumbles* And whenever I do get in the mood to write and the words start to flow, something incredibly annoying comes up - you know, like work. *eye roll* However, I don't have fic commitments so I guess I get off easy.
I'm sorry it's so hard at the moment hon. It'll get better; it always does. Right when you least expect it. *smish*
I know how you feel! Damn blinking cursor is so mocking.
Something that usually helps me, though, is listening to my "Solitudes" CD's while writing/typing. It works for me, and usually at least gets me to write a paragraph. ;D
