Okay, so here's the thing with the car. It's running fine. All of the parts that I can see when I crack it open, including the belts, look fine. The car doesn't smell until I turn on the heater, which sucks because the last few days have been irritatingly cold and rainy. And when I do turn on the heater, the car starts to smell of hot rubber. It smells a lot like it did the time one of my cars (Paco the Corsican Pimp, unsurprisingly) blew a hose while I was driving it and spewed this noxious cloud of something into my car, after which it reeked too much to drive. The main difference is that that time the car didn't smell until right before the hose blew, whereas this time it only smells when I turn the heater on.

The problem is I don't get paid until Friday -- hopefully; I didn't approve my timecard until a few hours later than I'm supposed to on Monday, but since nobody's gotten back to me yet I'm taking it as a good sign -- and now that my parents have traded in their paid-off Equinox with nothing wrong with it for a new car (how lovely for them ... *eyeroll*), I would have to drive my brother's car to work, assuming he would let me.

I'm just really goddamn sick of this fucking car, honestly. I still owe my mother $1780 for the transmission, and if it goes again I'm going to be sorely tempted to drive it off the nearest cliff.

I'm just really ridiculously sick of worrying about money. URGH.

my old car did this a lot. at least once a month or so, it would have the burning electric smell. it was always fine, but enough to cause my heart to stop each and every time.

When you can, have your belts checked for slippage. More likely, though, and I cringe to suggest this because it totally sucks when it goes out, but you might have your heater core looked at.

Yeah, I talked to the mechanic today and that's what he said it might be. (It's also not defogging very well, which is just great because those cold and rainy days have fogged the hell out of my windows.) I'm going to take it to the mechanic tomorrow, so we'll see.

You don't happen to know how much that would run me, do you? 'Cause anything more than two hundred bucks and I'll have no choice but to put up a Paypal button, seriously. *headdesk* (It doesn't happen to have anything to do with the transmission, does it? Because my tranny has a year-long warranty on it from AAMCO.)

Heater core is unrelated to the tranny as far as I know. When it goes out, using your heater/defroster sends a stinky film (from the antifreeze) through your vents along with the air.

Major suckage. What type of car do you have? you might google the question 'how much would it cost to replace a heater core on...', you might get a ballpark figure. Also, check with your mechanic to see how much it would cost to flush it first. That might solve your problem. But no promises.

This is the explanation I found just to clarify: The heater core is like a small radiator inside your dash. The coolant flow through it can be restricted by corrosion. The lack of flow of coolant through the heater core will result in a lack of warm air inside the car. Flushing out the heater core may help. If not, you will have to replace it. Also check the heater control valve if your car is equipped with one.
