Right, but other disturbing horror films like "Cannibal Holocaust" or "Buio Omega" or about a million bajillion others I can think of weren't marketed as mainstream horror. This one has been, and that's the problem. It's not a matter of familiarity with Vincenzo's work or familiarity with the horror genre, it's all about this particular genre (some would say subgenre) of horror films.

Horror is huge. HUGE. You could be a U.S. horror fan and go your whole life never seeing anything disturbing in this kind of rape-incest way and not even really KNOWING about this type of horror film.

I'm reminded of some old black and white zombie comics I read. At first I was all 'Yay, zombies' and I knew some people would die. Because, yanno, zombies. But when a woman and an unfortunate sharp object are lovingly detailed in slo-mo, I went and found something else to read.

So, yeah.

It's all fun and games until it takes seventeen billion panels to put someone's eye out.
