I might be a bit less amused by the horrifically awful reviews for the Airbender movie if not for the mental image (that should really be a DVD extra) of Shyamalan completely missing the point of the Racefail discussions.

I'm still trying to figure out if he's really that dense. I didn't think it was remotely possible, but at the same time, every time he speaks about it it makes me think he hasn't even read some of these criticisms. This one in particular is a very well-defined response, and highlighted by (I think?) Ebert, and I think it's a very good and thorough criticism/argument about the whole racebending thing.

I really need to watch his movies post-Signs so I can properly view his ego killing everything in his career, because it seems to me that each of his movies is worse- and worse-reviewed than the last. (I actually liked Signs.)

I...he...I didn't just read that, did I? I'm actually dreaming and I'll wake up into a more rational world, right?

You've actually paid attention to political discourse in this country for the past 30 years right?
right?

THis is how those of us who are policy wonks on something feel.

every day.

this is why the most biting, bitter and morbid graveyard humour comes from political blogs.

it's like everyone is as intentionally dense as Major Surprise there.

Actually, I used to *be* a policy wonk working on the issue of race, back when I worked for the American Anthropological Association. I just keep hoping that things will eventually improve. Eventually. Maybe. Possibly.

Y'know that the Greeks considered Hope to be the most terrible evil of all left in that box right?

Reading the horrible reviews has seriously made my week. They're all so hilarious! And how sad is it that this film is worse than Eclipse.

My daughter saw herself as Kitara and now her friend who’s Hispanic sees herself as Kitara, and that’s totally valid.

...Because obviously the character needs to be white before that can happen. JFC.

The movie just made me angry, and reading this is just awful.. he entirely screwed up a wonderful series and made it cheesy and tacky and...ugh!

Actually, the one nice thing about all those horrible reviews is that they've convinced me to take the original cartoon (already on my Netflix queue) and bump it to the top. (Turns out it's available for streaming, so I may start marathoning it over this long weekend that's about to begin.)

Do it! DOOOO EEEEEEET!

Really, while I enjoy the first season for what it is, the second season is where I think it really starts shining. Not coincidentally at all, that's the season where Toph is introduced.

Watched the first two seasons over the long weekend, and it's definitely a setup and characters that stick with you. I'm now curious to see how badly the movie mangled it, but not enough to pay to see it. (Torrenting may be my friend there -- much as I wound up torrenting the rest of the cartoon series after getting fed up with Netflix' streaming. I think there may be something to the rumor that they throttle back your bandwidth if you spend too many hours watching off their site.)

It doesn’t have, like, a token person. The entire landscape will be ethnically diverse. That’s the entire point of the series.

Except, of course, that token Indian guy added as the villain after the barrage of complaints.

Wow, I just spent the past 20 minutes quoting pieces from the interview and from the article loopychew linked. Needless to say, my family is astounded and I'm still frothing at the mouth.

What a complete and utter douchebag.

This is a man speaking in pure ignorance and doing an extremely shoddy job in backing up his reasons for choosing the actors he did. A blustering windbag.

An Asian company needs to remake this movie, and even if the effects aren't as jaw-dropping or advanced as this one, I'm thinking the plot and dialogue will shine truer.
