-- I filed a claim with Progressive just because ... well, it couldn't hurt, and if it goes through I can pay for it now rather than, say, when my birthday rolls around. Because ...

-- ... I am SO not giving up DC to fix the damn light. Especially since the light part of the headlight still works. (The high beam doesn't, but I never think to put them on anyway.) It's not attractive to look at, mind you, but I still have two working headlights. It's just that one of them is smashed, is all.

-- After a second look in the light of day, all of the damage is concentrated to the headlight. All of it. Those scratches I thought I saw last night? They're all deer fur. And, er, a couple of red flecks. Ew.

-- The car itself runs perfectly. It's as if the deer leapt into the street, yelled, "GAME ON!", and whacked my light with a cricket bat before leaping off to complete yet another part of the hazing ritual.

-- When I called my mom this morning, the first thing I said was, "So, you know how I said with the Neon that if I had one more thing go wrong with it, I'd have a nervous breakdown?" (On one hand, I've been jokey about it with her and the Progressive customer service rep. On the other hand, I've been close to tears all morning since the mechanic at the dealership quoted me $200 to fix it.)

-- I wish for once I could have something go wrong with my car that was MY fault. Hitting a deer that leaps in front of my car is not MY fault. Having my transmission explode is not MY fault. I want something that I can take the blame for, because I'm obviously very good at beating myself up about things, but I can't beat up inanimate vehicles or injured animals.

-- Did I mention I'm sick of throwing money at cars? 'Cause ... yeah.

Go talk to your local auto parts store about replacing the headlight. Odds are, you could do it yourself with just a little coaching (and probably do it for less than $20.) I bet your library has a book on repair for it, and they usually have pretty good directions.

This. A junkyard is also an option. $200 for a headlight is ludicrous, and the paperwork and insurance hit will eat up ANY time saved by not doing it yourself.
