A bunch of people I know on Facebook have "liked" a link from GoLikeUs that says, "If you cant afford to take care of your children .. STOP HAVING THEM!!!" (Actual number of exclamation points may vary.)

So I went over and "liked" one that said, "If you can't afford to take care of your children ... well, it's a shame it's so hard for poor women to get birth control, huh?"

I'm pretty sure they won't get it.

Yeah, I'm rapidly becoming that person as well. I was surprised and annoyed by how many people I know liked that one about illegal immigrants that was going around for a while.

One of my best friends from high school posted one of those, "I am a MOTHER and it is the BEST and MOST WONDERFUL and ONLY USEFUL thing a woman can do" memes, and I almost wanted to cry.

The only useful thing a woman can do?

Hello, Marie Curie?
Hello, Florence Nightengale?
Hello, Harriet Tubman?

oh, the pain.

The pain.

Oh good, maybe she'd like to take my daughter? After today, I'll deliver and throw in $100.

::eyeroll:: I really wish our society could get things sorted so nonparents didn't feel the need to insult parents and vice versa.

YES. Yes, yes, yes!

I want to have kids, and I'm looked down for both wanting to have them AND not having had them yet!

To the first, I was under the impression that it was a choice... and that allows me to CHOOSE to stay home and be a housewife as well as choose to work. I'm NOT automatically anti-feminist for wanting to stay home!

As for not having them yet, I'm 26. I can't carry for myself, and even if I could I wouldn't. My genetics are messed up, and I won't gift the same to anyone. Since I CAN'T carry, I'm not on any biological schedule, and I'd prefer that my kids didn't grow up starving. I've done it. It fucks with your head long term. (I HAVE to finish everything given me at a meal. Period. I'll eat things that are off and just cut off parts. Cleaning bad food out of the fridge is a tearful, angry, traumatic experience. If I am low on money, I hoard food even before paying bills. Dieting is damn near impossible.)

Everyone has an opinion, and if you didn't make the same choice as them you're WRONG, ANTI-FEMINIST or possibly going to hell. UGH.

"If you can't afford to take care of your children, the state will refuse to cover your abortion with Medicaid!"

I think it has a ring to it, no?

Ugh, this is why I hardly ever read Facebook. I mean, my best friend in high school was (and is) an evangelical Christian, and it was nice to reconnect with her, but she's one of the very, very few who doesn't feel the need to go around loudly judging other people. It just reminds me *why* I didn't keep in touch with many of them!

This! Totally this! I've been on the receiving end of way too many helpful one-liners and *eyeroll* idealists.

The truth of the matter is that life can't be summed up in one-liners and catchy beliefs. Live my life and then you can judge me - but I still won't care.

Because Gods know that birth control is widespread and no one gets any false messages about it, or isn't taught at all, or stuff like that. And Abortion is never looked down upon.

Clearly these women should just stop having sex altogether. Only the rich can get on down.

Some people don't seem to realize that having kids is part of reproductive choice and human rights. They can't comprehend that birth control is a complicated issue involving, like, money and religion and education and stuff.

I dunno, everyone has gone crazy, so I'm spending my days pretending to be from another planet.

Yeah, don't get me started on this. As a case manager who works with welfare recipients, the majority of the clients I deal with are women who had children too early and too often. People don't realize that it's not just a case of "I'm gonna have another kid so I can get that extra $100 or whatever a month".

YES.

It was absolute hell to get birth control until I ended up the psych ward. (Untreated Bipolar I) Then, they were like 'While you're here, is there anything else you would like done?'

I jumped on that so fast I have no words.

Now I have an IUD and peace of mind!
