I'm only ten minutes in and I've already got the gist.

Police: We need help solving this murder from a sharp but incredibly rude white guy. Oh, if only House were a cop!

Steven Moffat: Well, we don't have House, but we DO have this guy who looks a hell of a lot like Peter Wingfield if you squint.

Police: ... fair enough.

Aha! That's it! Thank you! I've been wracking my brain trying to figure out who he reminded me of...

Police: Cuddy: We need help solving this murder undiagnosed case from a sharp but incredibly rude white guy. Oh, if only House Sherlock Holmes were a cop doctor!

There. Fixed that for you.

Yeah, the House people are pretty open about it being a direct Sherlock Holmes ripoff. Or is it called an "interpretation" when you're making stupid amounts of money off it?

Or "homage," because it sounds fancier.

Not really. It was sort of my point. ;)

It kinda feels like Sherlock Holmes as written by someone who watched House knowing full well he was based on Sherlock Holmes. Not that that's a BAD thing, though ...

I have a Holmes canon reread coming up, what with me getting a few free e-books and not having ever gotten around to reading A Study in Scarlet though I've probably read just about every other story in the canon -- anyway, need to check on this, but the impression I've gotten is that Holmes was actually a raging dickhead, at least in the earlier stuff. I do recall him pulling some douchey stuff because he thought it was funny, and being generally ragingly contemptuous of the intelligence of others.

For potential future viewing: Stuart: A Life Backwards. Tom Hardy (Eames) and Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock). Painful and heartbreaking.

Peter Wingfield! You're right, he does look like him.

I spend most of the first episode thinking "It looks like Merlin, it has high cheekbones and beady eyes like Merlin, but its voice in inexplicably deep and a bit shocking. Did someone travel five years into the future to kidnap Colin Morgan? This is honestly puzzling me and I can't quite enjoy it because IS IT OR IS IT NOT MERLIN?"

I decided it wasn't, but this was the genesis of my theory that All White British Dudes fall into two categories: skinny-faced and dark haired...or light-haired, and round-faced. Sherlock vs. Watson. Ten vs. The Master. Neil Gaiman vs. Ricky Gervais. Sold separately or in sets!

Ricky Gervais *USED* to fall into the skinny faced (or at least high-cheekboned pretty boy) category. Clearly, he's some sort of shapeshifting English everyman or something.

Yep, it's Saxon heritage vs Norman heritage*. And if you add in blokes from the northern parts of the UK, you get the freckly ginger Celtic heritage too.

* Massive generalisation. Please do not point out the scads of exceptions.

I summed him up to a friend as "The looks of Cillian Murphy and the voice (when he feels like it) of Alan Rickman.". And now I can add "and the nose of Peter Wingfield, if you squint.". No wonder I adore him.
