Did the people who were programming the spell tutorial challenges in the "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets" computer game just come back from a round of Dance Dance Revolution before they started doin' em? Yes ... yes, they did.
Yeah, Eternal Sunshine. Look, here's the thing ... I don't hate Jim Carrey. I like him, I do. It's just ... you know that friend of yours, who's really talented at something that he loves doing, like drawing or writing or soemthing, but he just keeps doing something else because all of the idiots he knows keep encouraging him? And it just pisses you off because if you could paint or write the way he did, you'd tell everybody to fuck off and just do what you love?
That's why Jim Carrey bothers me. Because I know damn well that when he keeps the comedy low-key and goes for a nice, even dose of drama along with it, it's a hell of a lot better than the other mindless, "hilarious" shit he keeps ending up in. (Remember that remake of the Six Million Dollar Man, and how I was worried because it's supposed to be a spoof? Well, according to EW's issue last week, the screenwriter for the remake is the same guy who wrote Road Trip and Old School. I wonder if Lee Majors would think it was creepy if I went to his house and asked for a hug.)
But this ... this is exactly the kind of stuff he should be doing all the time. If he finally gets that Oscar nomination next year, I will not be the least bit surprised. (Probably the only good thing to come out of the screener ban is that if the studios want to get some of their movies on DVD and in the grubby paws of the Academy members come voting time, they're going to have to get some of the smaller but better films out in the wasteland that is January and February.) The rest of the cast was stellar as well, but just ... just, man.
And the script ... fuck, I've always wanted to write like Charlie Kaufman, but there can't possibly be enough hallucinogenic drugs on the planet. Well, maybe in David Crosby's luggage.
Also, picked up this month's issue of "Premiere" with the 100 Greatest Movie Characters of all time. Vito Corleone made #1, which I can totally understand and quite heartily approve of. Gollum was the only LOTR series character to make the list at #10, one notch below Jeff Spicoli. My other personal favorites were Verbal Kint at #100, Oda Mae Brown at #95, Jack Sparrow at #87, Lloyd Dobler at #72, Navin Johnson at #66, Edward Scissorands at #65, Carrie White at #63, Shaft at #62, The Dude at #55, The Terminator at #40, Willy Wonka at #38, Marge Gunderson at #27, E.T. at #26, The Little Tramp at #24, Carl Spackler at #18, and Indiana Jones at #7.

Glad to read
Date: 2004-03-20 08:30 pm (UTC)I don't care for Jim Carrey in his comedic roles either.
I thought he was very good in The Truman Show though.
As for the list of greatest movie characters, I think Lloyd Dobler should be a good bit higher. (John Cusack rocks.)
