Oscarwatch begins!
Jan. 9th, 2011 09:21 pmSeeing as how my internet's been an utter bastard today, I've started in on my possible Oscar contenders.
Darren Aronofsky is off his goddamn nut.
That said, visually this is one hell of a movie. It's incredibly striking at times in that regard, but it can get creepy as fuck at times. However, this is Natalie Portman's movie and she sells the fragile character impressively, as far as I'm concerned. I can't resist picturing her as a strong capable person most of the time, so I thought she gave an incredible performance.
Also, the guy playing her partner in the ballet is the guy who she's hooking up with in real life, and as he's kind of adorable, I commend her taste in guys. :)

It's going to take a lot for me to think anyone but James Franco should win Best Actor after this.
I have a confession to make. I love James Franco. That man is fucking *insane*. In that sense, he's perfect to play Aron Ralston. It's basically an hour and a half of him acting opposite a boulder, and it's a tour de force of talent. He's got the chops.
Speaking of the chops, that scene -- I sobbed through the whole thing. I think most of it was for obvious reasons, but part of it is because the soundtrack fully intends for you to feel it too. The horror of watching him cut through nerves wasn't half as awful as the violin screeches which accompanied them.
