And that's why I think that magnificent bastard should win the goddamn Best Actor.
Well, okay, I already wanted him to because he's Hugh Jackman and he's wonderful, but now I really truly desperately want him to. Sometimes I forget that he was in musical theater, and then I think about it and it makes me giddy, and so he should win the Oscar so I'll never forget that he was in musical theater and I'll be happy all the time. That makes sense, right?
Oh! Also, now I know why Anne Hathaway is pretty much a lock for Best Supporting Actress. My grandfather (who's the other big film fan in my family) doesn't really like her, not because she's a bad actress or anything, but because her face throws him off. Like, her eyes and her nose and her mouth are all slightly too big for her face, and it distracts him. I like the way she looks myself, and it occurred to me as I watched that it added another dimension to her falling apart. Not only is she wasting away, but the way her features are just a liiiiiittle bit off makes her look like she's shrinking even more than she is. Her singing really impressed me, too. I expected Hugh Jackman to be good, because he's been in musicals, but I always forget that she can sing at all, so hearing her belt out some fairly difficult musical theater work made me proud of her. Because I love her to bits and I can't wait to see her win her first Oscar. :D
Also, casting like Sasha Baron Cohen and Helena Bonham Carter makes me think that there really should be a Best Casting Oscar. (I'm also seriously starting to wonder when Sasha Baron Cohen is going to get nominated for his first Oscar. I think he's slowly but surely working his way up to a Best Supporting Oscar -- he did really well in "Hugo" last year, he and HBC steal every scene they're in here, and I think if he got juuuuuust the right role, he could get a nomination.)
I really do think that it's going to win Best Picture now that I've seen it. I loved "Argo", but I think that Oscar voters tend to go for epic scope, and I can't imagine they're not going to take into consideration just how difficult it must be to adapt such a classic musical to the screen.
