Accused in POW scandal, soldier tells of questions -- Okay, you know what? The part of the article that bugs me is this part ...
The alleged abuses of prisoners were "stupid, kid things — pranks," Terrie England said. "And what the (Iraqis) do to our men and women are just? The rules of the Geneva Convention, does that apply to everybody or just us?"
Because --
a.) "Stupid, kid things -- pranks" -- Pranks?! Correct me if I'm wrong, but if kids in the United States were caught doing shit like this to other kids, they'd still get in trouble, right? That hasn't changed or anything, has it?
And b.) Yes, the Geneva Convention rules apply to everyone. That means that the Iraqis who did bad things should be punished, AND your schmuck of a relative who took pictures of them faking sex acts should be punished. But smooth move there, trying to divert attention like that. Sick, but smooth.
Look, maybe they were told to do it by their superiors, maybe they weren't. But the fact is, "I was under orders" doesn't really have a good history of working as a excuse in the military, and "I didn't know the law" (a bogus excuse in this case) doesn't have a good history of working anywhere.
