Kerry: Bush Chooses Ideology Over Science
This is the part that annoyed me -- "Only John Kerry would declare the country to be in scientific decline on a day when the country's first privately funded space trip is successfully completed," [Bush campaign spokesman] Schmidt said, referring to the flight of a privately financed rocket over California.
We don't need a privately funded space trip. We need stem cell research.
Jackass.
EDIT: Also, I'm not allowing myself to listen to the Doc Ock theme from the Spider-Man 2 soundtrack on the Metro anymore. I get so very, very disappointed when a bespectacled psychotic armed with metal tentacles doesn't attack the train.

Date: 2004-06-21 07:00 pm (UTC)There are no trains here, alas. Else I might stake myself out by one, looking woefully big-eyed and hostage-like.

Date: 2004-06-21 08:00 pm (UTC)Not for nothing, but who's to say what we _do_ and _don't_ need at all? Speaking as a moderate scientist, I'm kind of sick of everyone jumping on the Nancy Reagan bandwagon as if stem cell research will absolutely positively cure Alzheimers and Parkinsons and it'll bring Ronnie back from the dead and make all the terrorists see the error of their ways. Hey, if anyone _knew_ that _for sure_, then we wouldn't need to do _research_ on stem cells in the first place. Maybe Bush is a jerk for stifling the stem cell alley, but there's _plenty_ of other research going on in this country that has nothing to do with stem cells. (F'rinstance, I got a UK alumni newsletter in the mail a while back that suggested a strong connection between Alzheimers and chronic mercury exposure. We don't need stem cells to study heavy metal toxicity.)
So yeah, I think it is a little silly for Kerry to say that in a country where a guy can fly into space on his own dime, we're in a new dark ages just because a pro-lifer is in the White House. So stem-cell research is four to eight years behind what it could have been. Like we're all gonna own flying cars once Kerry's President.
I'm not saying he doesn't have a point, mind you, but it seems to me there's much better points Kerry could be making right about now. Blasting Bush's science policy is like pointing out the splinter in the eye of a guy with fifty two-by-fours sticking out of his ass.
