It's nice to start off the morning watching Sense & Sensibility. Even though I spend a lot of the movie wanting to smack Marianne and fling her at Colonel Brandon.

Emma Thompson's commentary is one my favorites ever, too. She's constantly talking from beginning to end, all of it is interesting, and my favorite bit is when Colonel Brandon first shows up and spots Marianne and Eleanor sees him watching -- "Oh, who's this? He's watching my sister. Quite a dish." *snerk* Just when I think Snape's screwed with my Alan Rickman fangirlishness, Colonel Brandon pulls me back in.

I'm downloading "The Raven" as read by Christopher Walken. Hee. I love that clip so.

EDIT: Every romantic movie starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan should be redone with Alan Rickman and Emma Thompson, just 'cause.

Including "Joe Versus the Volcano"? Because I'd pay good money to see that.

Sad to say, I missed that one. ::thanks the movie gods:: But really, is there a movie that *couldn't* be improved by this simple method?

uhm. i was not thinking. weren't they all bad anyway? should emma and alan be wasted in them???

Alan and Emma could make any movie good, as long as the director was smart enough to let them play with their dialogue a little. Or, you know, a lot.

In any event, I'd much rather see those two remake The Shop Around the Corner than Tom and Meg.

a) yep.

b) "you got mail" was a crime against humanity. or ernst lubitsch. no, come to think of it, humanity after all.

c) do post what other goodies emma said on the commentary!

You know, I have You've Got Mail in my collection, and I have no idea where it came from. If I was going to have a Tom & Meg movie, I should have gotten Joe Versus The Volcano, damn it. At least I like that one.

And if you like Sense And Sensibility, it's worth renting just to hear Emma banter with the producer about the movie. It's so cute and well-informed. There's another commentary with Ang Lee, that I still haven't gotten around to.

I'm loving that idea - imagine how much better You've Got Mail would be:

AOL: "You've got mail!"
Rickman: "Shut up."
AOL: "Yes, sir."

I think "Sleepless in Seattle" is fine as it is, in part because I don't want to see Rickman and Thompson burdened with a cute kid. But oh yes, would't "You've Got Mail" be priceless with Rickman and Thompson? Or even a nice remake of "The Shop Around the Corner" because then they could snarl and snark at one another right out in the open, and it would be joyous.

Since I don't have a DVD player and still live in the 20th century with my busted VCR, I wonder if they have a video with all the commentry included...

As for Rickman in You've Got Mail, I wouldn't put him through the torture!

I don't know if it's the same at all of the stores, but yesterday when I was at Best Buy, they were selling one DVD player for only $36. It probably didn't have all of the bells and whistles, but it still plays.

It's worth investing in a DVD player anymore. They're not even making VCRs anymore -- all the ones they sell in stores these days have been sitting in warehouses for months, if not years.

Wow!
Good, I have a valid excuse for getting this new fangled thingy now. Not just - ooh, extra screen time and all those pretty interviews and behind the scenes shots!
One question though, do you find the DVD system is more expensive and more maintanance?

Date: 2004-08-15 02:21 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] apocalypsos.livejournal.com
More maintenance? Not really, especially considering you get more stuff on a DVD than you do on a VHS tape, the quality's better, and as long as you can take care of a CD, you can take care of a DVD.

Also, it's not really all that much more expensive than VHS anymore at all. What really helps is knowing where the deals are. Suncoast has some great deals (now their $14.99 DVDs are 2 for $22, and their $9.99 ones are 2 for $15), you can get to-be-released DVDs at a discount if you reserve them there, and if you sign up for their Replay club, you get gift certificates you can use to go towards buying more. (I got one for twenty bucks yesterday in the mail, but to keep it in perspective, I buy a LOT of DVDs evry month.)

They're not the only place who has a points-program, either -- I got signed up for one at Best Buy yesterday when I was buying the DVD player. (I think it cost me five or ten bucks, but it's worth it if it means I get gift certificates for my troubles later on.)

From: [identity profile] ketaki.livejournal.com
Hm, that's better that I was expecting. I think the main problem I would have is in finding the deals but you've just given me a few ideas right there!

I just hope the price difference between the UK and US isn't that huge.
As far as I'm concerned, DVDs last longer than VHSs and frankly, they have more to offer these days.

I'm beginning to imagine your DVD collection in my head as a multi-story complex in the middle of Ney York. In a year, you'll need to rent somewhere to store it all!

I am such a lit nerd, but the entire time I was reading 'Sense and Sensibility' prior to seeing the movie I was rooting for Eleanor and Colonel Brandon to get together. Put me into a huge fit of 14 yo pique when it didn't happen.

Ah, the beginnings of shipperness.

Just to make you snicker. I just wrote the phrase "Jesus fucking Christ." And then proceeded to think that if Jesus is Christ, then how can he fuck him? I blame this on you. Seriously.
