Today, I got an email. It said,

Dear trollprincess,

Congratulations! You're now officially the only person on the planet who doesn't have a Gmail account! Please have this Oreo we found under our desks, our deepest condolences, and 6 Gmail invites.

So, now I have no Gmail account, but I do have a cookie. And some lint I scraped off the cookie.

Life is good. :)

I don't have a gmail account, either. I don't like the idea of some software automatically scanning the contents of my mail.

It's my account I use to recieve my fic updates that I have to beta. God knows I'm not gonna get any financial information sent to me on that account.

All email programs read your mail. They have to, to send the information from sender to server to other servers to recipient.

No HUMAN ever reads your GMail. A machine scans it for key words and delivers ads SOMETIMES based on the words in the email.

So GMail isn't any different. All programs 'read' your mail. GMail just takes that info and delivers unobtrusive ads 50% of the time.
