Today, I got an email. It said,

Dear [livejournal.com profile] trollprincess,

Congratulations! You're now officially the only person on the planet who doesn't have a Gmail account! Please have this Oreo we found under our desks, our deepest condolences, and 6 Gmail invites.

Sincerely,

Gmail Support Staff

So, now I have no Gmail account, but I do have a cookie. And some lint I scraped off the cookie.

Life is good. :)

You're not the only person.

What is gmail and why does everyone want an account? It's like a super!sekrit!club, or something...

It's a Google-run email account with 1Gb of space. They try to control the flow of takers by issuing invites to people who've already got accounts, but if my friends list is any indication, they're annoying and hard to get rid of. Personally, I like not having one ... it makes me feel special. :)

I didn't want a Gmail account either. A "friend" of mine who may no longer be a friend signed me up involuntarily.

I should look into just deleting the damned thing.

So... you're.. offended and annoyed because you have another email address.. that.. no one is sitting on you and making you log into?

HUH?

No. The problem is that she emails it.

I have asked her not to. I am not going to set up a redirect on it just so that she can continue to do what I fucking asked her not to.

Especially since I told her to start with that I did not want a Gmail address and it's set up anyway. And yes, I don't check it. Things are, as far as I know, getting interesting in the rpg we comod...she's emailing the box I don't use for plot/mod stuff.

Wow. That's, like, the epitome of thoughtlessness. "Hi. I'm going to send you really important mail, like your bank statement and stuff, but I'm going to send it to your name c/o Pamela Anderson. It's up to you to make the arrangements with her to receive your mail. And of course I'm doing this for you because I'm nice and wonderful and helping you establish a relationship with Pamela Anderson." What a great friend.

Is it in bad taste to bust out with "She's a super-geek! She's super-geeky!" this soon after Rick James has died?

It's good because of the gig of storage space. I have one solely for large files and email storage and the like. Convenient, you know?

It's also good for the "conversation" feature, where an exchange of a series of messages between people is presented in a continuous format, instead of forcing you to have to open 20 different messages just to see what's going on...

color me without one as well. I mean, sure there have been times when a Gb seemed like the answer to life's questions but it's not. No, the truth can now be told. The answer is is really Haagen Dazs' Dulce de Leche ice cream.

also an excellent answer to many of life's question (I loathe the low carb version - loathe it with the heat of a thousand suns) but am looking forward to HD's Cafe Mocha Frappe flavor as soon as I can find it.

In a semi-related and shocking discovery - bordering on healthy (but really not) I adore the carmamel swirl bards from Healthy Choice. Of course an even healthier choice would be -- oh, an apple.

But sometimes you NEED ice cream. Where as the question remains -- do I need gmail? Who's gonna be sending me files that large anyhow? looks sternly at f-list I didn't think so.

Oh, definitely. The low-carb version is nasty, but the frozen yogurt has the advantage of tasting like the real thing while still being better for you. Mmm ... great, now I need some.

I don't have a gmail account, either. I don't like the idea of some software automatically scanning the contents of my mail.

All email programs read your mail. They have to, to send the information from sender to server to other servers to recipient.

No HUMAN ever reads your GMail. A machine scans it for key words and delivers ads SOMETIMES based on the words in the email.

So GMail isn't any different. All programs 'read' your mail. GMail just takes that info and delivers unobtrusive ads 50% of the time.

/commercial

Really though, it's a naive and unfounded claim.

I've so far remained gmail-free. Although I'm considering it. Maybe. Possibly. I don't know, I feel like the last thing to jump off the thing. (is that goats and mountains? or lemurs? or dodos? or people, off a bridge? I don't know.)

I'm so puzzled by the omgantiGmail stance people seem to have developed here. I mean, it's an email service, not the bubonic plague. I have one, and it works much better for me than Hotmail (killstabdie) did; it's hardly a badge of quirky alternative cool not to have one. *gets flamed*

Most of the reason I don't have one is because I already have five. I get one more email and I believe someone owes me some eggrolls.

See, that's exactly why I don't have a g-mail account. My five e-mail addresses allow me to filter stuff the way I like. I don't know what I'd do with another one. Besides, Trillan gives me alerts whenever I get a mail in my Hotmail and Yahoo accounts; it doesn't have an option for g-mail.

I must admit, they are extremly useful for a dedicated email for school. The TA's use them in my department because you never delete anything and so you can always have a student's email handy if there is contention about something.

Also, you hang on to all department mailings, and that's good.

Gmail is very useful for some things.

I'm planning on going back to college next spring. A g-mail account sounds like it might be a useful tool.

BTW, I love your icon!
