Okay, let's be serious for a minute here. Let's say that Bush really does get re-elected. What do you honestly think is going to happen in the next four years if that occurs?

(Don't mind me. I'm just curious.)

EDIT: I'd just like to add for the record that considering how destructive people have been this election year, I wouldn't be surprised if, no matter which one gets elected, there's an assassination attempt in the next year. I don't think one is going to happen, but if one does ... yeah, I won't be shocked. There are some seriously screwed-up, pissed-off people who are totally against both major candidates.

40 days and nights of darkness!

The dead rising from their graves!

Cats and dogs, living together!

Well, okay, no. But I fully expect him to enact long-lasting reforms that will (a) further erode our civil rights, (b) place more tax reward emphasis on corporate blowjobs for the rich and less and less for both the poor and middle class, (c) if not wreck, then further degrade the environment in favor of polluting megacorporations, (d) push legislation that will blur even more the line between church and state and thus push back women's rights, the gay movement, and pro-choice advocacy, (e) get us into at least one more pointless, long, ugly, bloody war, and (f) make me want to smack his stupid monkey face in with a Buick every time I see it.

Right now, he's ahead of schedule on (f).

further slow erosion of civil rights for every group except white, protestant christian males. more of US soldiers being sacrificed on the altar of Georgie's ego.

but nothing big enough to motivate people to rise up en masse and kick the assholes out of office.

cynical? yeah.

Well, for starters he'll drill every last piece of wilderness in my home state (Utah) for oil. He'll probably start another war. He'll make the hold of the conservatives on our government almost impossible to dislodge. He'll probably succeed in passing several laws impeding free speech and freedom of the press (but never the 2nd amendment). He'll probably accelerate global warming and bring us that much closer to the Day After Tomorrow scenario.

And those are just the least radical things I could think of.

He'll do some things we;ll disagree with, and he'll do some things we'll agree with. But every time he does something we disagree with, we'll wonder what it was like to have Kerry.

Well, if those four Supreme Court Justices really do retire during Bush Reign 2 and he appoints Asshats like himself, they'll overturn Roe vs. Wade, and the legality of abortion will be left up to individual states. 20 - 30 states will probably ban abortion outright.

So, to answer your question, I'm either going to have to move to New York or California (two of the state's least likely to ban abortion) or learn to perform them at home with an unbent wire hanger and some peroxide.

The Washington Monthly ran just such a story, asking a bunch of experts. I'm rather fond of Galbraith's version, but that's because it's the apocalypse as written by an econ nerd, which I totally appreciate. Plus, it has a happy ending. ^^

Global Thermonuclear War.

No, not really. Though I'm not convinced he actually grasps the whole, this is a computer playing tic tac toe until it learns and how is that relevant thing, nor that actual humans over there in his pet war are actually getting shot and blown up and shit.

Really, continuing scary erosion of civil rights in the name of safety. Continuing of snubbing of the rest of the world. Continuing of kissing business ass and smacking people who work upside the head.

Hm. Maybe we could teach him about getting wood on the internets. Then his brain would be all occupied-like, and someone else....wait, the next person to make decisions after him is Cheney. ...Crap.

Georgie'll probably get another dog, hang out at the ranch a little more. He's working on his primo collection of Gulf War collectibles and he's almost saved enough of his allowance to get the Hummer Action Set, so he's got that going for him. He'll make a couple of speeches they hand to him, maybe watch some TV. Laura's always on him to listen to those elocution tapes, but that's hard work so he'll listen to his classic rock tapes instead and pretend to be practicipating. Yup.

The Administration, on the other hand, will continue to eat at people's civil rights in the name of "safety", will start another pointless war with some country who never asked to be 'liberated', will increase the severity of the backdoor draft and/or institute an actual draft (which would be spun into a 'protection squad' or some shit so as to avoid calling it a 'draft'), will replace 2 to 4 Supreme Court justices with Scalia clones, and will basically make this a very unpleasant country for anyone who isn't at least two of the following: Rich, White, Male, Christian. Oh, and they'll raise taxes on the middle classes, provide shitty or no health care for the poor, continue the policies of rewarding job outsourcing, and God only knows what else.

I think Bush should get a beagle. They're awesome.

*snerk* That's probably the most honest thing anyone could say. (Of any candidate. It would work in the other direction.) I'm deathly afraid of Bush, but honestly?

Yes. That is what's going to happen.

Don't forget making access to birth control methods "optional" (see: recent stories where pharmacists refuse to provide pills. Some OB-GYNs even refuse to prescribe them).
The guy who runs Operation Rescue wants only condoms to be available. Why? Because men are in charge in regards to condoms. It's all about controlling women.

I think bad bad things will happen.

Well, first thought was "the apocalypse," but that was just a gut reaction and shouldn't be taken at all seriously. /deadpan

But really, under Bush again I can see the rest of the world's governments supporting us less and less, leading to an even larger increase in anti-american sentiment globally, and a bad time for being an American tourist. I think we'll see a further decline in public education. Individual's rights will be repressed even more for the "safety of all," and most of the American public won't even notice, or if they somehow do hear about it they will think their government is 'protecting' them.

Further restrictions on abortion. Serious attempts to pass the constitutional amendment regarding marriage. More of the same utter disregard for the environment.

Well, this is depressing. Come election night, I'm going to be glued to the tv.

Oh, and also. If he does get re-elected, I have already told some close friends and family about my tentative plans to move out of the country. Because the ignorance of so many Americans would disgust me, as would the ignorance of our president.
And because the idea of being around while our country turns into 1984 frightens me.
From: [identity profile] malhablada.livejournal.com
*slaps forehead* Oh, I was going to rant about that too! And it's not like it's just the "morning after" pill - it's all reversible birth control (the pill, diaphragms, etc).

All the women's reproductive issues are so blatantly religious in nature. It makes me ill. So much for separation of church and state...

Thanks for reminding me!

I agree with those who mentioned a loss of our civil liberties if he's re-elected. There's a really good chance that the next president will get to appoint some Supreme Court justices and if Bush gets his guys on there they will definitely overturn Roe vs. Wade and who knows what other havoc they will wreak.

As for the assassination attempt thing - well every president that has taken office in a year ending in zero has either died in office, had an assassination attempt or been assassinated.

....O_O

Find yourself a nice doctor willing to break the law. Please.
Wire hangers are painful.

(Abortion sidenote -- and you may know all this but I don't know if others do -- the very basis of Roe v. Wade is that there are doctors willing to break the laws. Roe's original suit was for Hallward, a doctor charged with breaking the Texas bans on abortion, to be able to intervene -- and they let him, even in the Texas district courts.

The reason it got to the Supreme Court was because Doe, a childless, married [and nonpregnant] couple filed a companion complaint on the charges that Mrs Doe -- who had a neural/chemical disorder that had her doctors advising her to 1)not take the Pill and 2)not have children -- was suffering because of the worry that she would concieve and have no way to end the pregnancy. She would not be in physical danger, but was unadvised to have children.

The District Court said this wasn't a controversial issue, and turned the family down, and that was appealed by all three (Roe, Hallward, and Doe).

It seems to be a little-known fact about the case that the real reason it got brought up at all, was because of someone who wasn't, in fact, pregnant. The Supreme Court, in fact, turned that appeal down, but because the District Attorney cross-appealed the original decision to let Hallward intervene on Roe's behalf, the decision to legalize abortion became an issue.)

In any case, DOCTORS GOOD. HANGERS BAD!!

The guy who runs Operation Rescue wants only condoms to be available. O_o the FUCK? If you're going to not prescribe the Pill because of religious beliefs, fine, be a fanatic (although I don't think you should be able to work at a national branch pharmacy. Religiously-owned, private pharmacy? COOL, baby. but CVS? no way).

But how can you say condoms are okay and not be prescribing the pill? O_O O_O O_O That's just blatant, unapologetic misogyny. And what irks me is, they probably back it up with some biblical text.
From: [identity profile] malhablada.livejournal.com
Well, that's maybe the best summary of Roe v. Wade I've ever heard. I did know it, but I'm sure there's other people who didn't, so thanks for posting.

And the hanger thing was more sarcastic than anything else. Actually, at this point in my life if I were to catch pregnant (which would be a goddamn miracle since I'm not currently having sex) I would probably keep the baby unless there were serious complications. My pro-choice stance stems from a "NO ONE tells me what to do with my body" kind of place. Plus, I remember what it was like to have less options than I have now and go through a pregnancy scare.

I'm glad you put that out there, though. I wouldn't want someone reading that and thinking that a hanger is a decent substitute, or something you can easily manage at a friends house or something.
