Okay, let's be serious for a minute here. Let's say that Bush really does get re-elected. What do you honestly think is going to happen in the next four years if that occurs?

(Don't mind me. I'm just curious.)

EDIT: I'd just like to add for the record that considering how destructive people have been this election year, I wouldn't be surprised if, no matter which one gets elected, there's an assassination attempt in the next year. I don't think one is going to happen, but if one does ... yeah, I won't be shocked. There are some seriously screwed-up, pissed-off people who are totally against both major candidates.

40 days and nights of darkness!

The dead rising from their graves!

Cats and dogs, living together!

Well, okay, no. But I fully expect him to enact long-lasting reforms that will (a) further erode our civil rights, (b) place more tax reward emphasis on corporate blowjobs for the rich and less and less for both the poor and middle class, (c) if not wreck, then further degrade the environment in favor of polluting megacorporations, (d) push legislation that will blur even more the line between church and state and thus push back women's rights, the gay movement, and pro-choice advocacy, (e) get us into at least one more pointless, long, ugly, bloody war, and (f) make me want to smack his stupid monkey face in with a Buick every time I see it.

Right now, he's ahead of schedule on (f).

further slow erosion of civil rights for every group except white, protestant christian males. more of US soldiers being sacrificed on the altar of Georgie's ego.

but nothing big enough to motivate people to rise up en masse and kick the assholes out of office.

cynical? yeah.

Well, for starters he'll drill every last piece of wilderness in my home state (Utah) for oil. He'll probably start another war. He'll make the hold of the conservatives on our government almost impossible to dislodge. He'll probably succeed in passing several laws impeding free speech and freedom of the press (but never the 2nd amendment). He'll probably accelerate global warming and bring us that much closer to the Day After Tomorrow scenario.

And those are just the least radical things I could think of.

Yes. That is what's going to happen.

Well, if those four Supreme Court Justices really do retire during Bush Reign 2 and he appoints Asshats like himself, they'll overturn Roe vs. Wade, and the legality of abortion will be left up to individual states. 20 - 30 states will probably ban abortion outright.

So, to answer your question, I'm either going to have to move to New York or California (two of the state's least likely to ban abortion) or learn to perform them at home with an unbent wire hanger and some peroxide.

Don't forget making access to birth control methods "optional" (see: recent stories where pharmacists refuse to provide pills. Some OB-GYNs even refuse to prescribe them).
The guy who runs Operation Rescue wants only condoms to be available. Why? Because men are in charge in regards to condoms. It's all about controlling women.

You don't think it will be shut down as giving comfort to the enemy?

I think that Abortion will be outlawed, prayer in school will be mandated, Social Security will be stopped, medicare and medicaid will be shut down.

There will be redistricting throughout the United States as Republicans solidify their power. Our civil liberties disappear, and the free press fails.

The draft is reinstated, and the war is spread to Iran and Syria. In an attempt to placate the Muslims and the UN, the United States begins to pressure Israel more, causing them to threaten to use nuclear arms...

It is not a pretty picture.

Really, continuing scary erosion of civil rights in the name of safety. Continuing of snubbing of the rest of the world. Continuing of kissing business ass and smacking people who work upside the head.

Georgie'll probably get another dog, hang out at the ranch a little more. He's working on his primo collection of Gulf War collectibles and he's almost saved enough of his allowance to get the Hummer Action Set, so he's got that going for him. He'll make a couple of speeches they hand to him, maybe watch some TV. Laura's always on him to listen to those elocution tapes, but that's hard work so he'll listen to his classic rock tapes instead and pretend to be practicipating. Yup.

The Administration, on the other hand, will continue to eat at people's civil rights in the name of "safety", will start another pointless war with some country who never asked to be 'liberated', will increase the severity of the backdoor draft and/or institute an actual draft (which would be spun into a 'protection squad' or some shit so as to avoid calling it a 'draft'), will replace 2 to 4 Supreme Court justices with Scalia clones, and will basically make this a very unpleasant country for anyone who isn't at least two of the following: Rich, White, Male, Christian. Oh, and they'll raise taxes on the middle classes, provide shitty or no health care for the poor, continue the policies of rewarding job outsourcing, and God only knows what else.

I think Bush should get a beagle. They're awesome.

Well, first thought was "the apocalypse," but that was just a gut reaction and shouldn't be taken at all seriously. /deadpan

But really, under Bush again I can see the rest of the world's governments supporting us less and less, leading to an even larger increase in anti-american sentiment globally, and a bad time for being an American tourist. I think we'll see a further decline in public education. Individual's rights will be repressed even more for the "safety of all," and most of the American public won't even notice, or if they somehow do hear about it they will think their government is 'protecting' them.

Further restrictions on abortion. Serious attempts to pass the constitutional amendment regarding marriage. More of the same utter disregard for the environment.

Well, this is depressing. Come election night, I'm going to be glued to the tv.

I agree with those who mentioned a loss of our civil liberties if he's re-elected. There's a really good chance that the next president will get to appoint some Supreme Court justices and if Bush gets his guys on there they will definitely overturn Roe vs. Wade and who knows what other havoc they will wreak.

As for the assassination attempt thing - well every president that has taken office in a year ending in zero has either died in office, had an assassination attempt or been assassinated.

America will stop letting in foreign tourists entirely.

Bush will work his way round to gradual legislation against Islam, in an attempt to ultimately outlaw it (because of how well that worked against, for example, alcohol).

Then there will be a big earthquake, and New York and Los Angeles will both be turned into island fortresses where nobody goes in and nobody comes out. Because I've just remembered that the Random Busty Chick in Escape from LA was there mostly for being a Moslem.

Back in late October 2000 and during the month of November, I recall discussing with my friends a mass migration to Canada if Bush were to win.

I still live in Philly.

I think I'm more serious about leaving the country this time around, but I'm not sure. I think most of us middle-class peons will pretty much go on about our lives, watching in horror as our civil liberties are slowly curtailed, abortion is outlawed, children are killed by other children playing with daddy's assault rifle, all of Europe and most of the rest of the world turns their backs on us, and we revert to the isolationism of the late 19th Century.

Then 2008 will come and we'll elect a Democrat and he or she will fix everything and the country will go back to normal, except that the rest of the world will still eye us suspiciously, because they'll never really be able to trust us.

Because there's no way in hell anyone'd elect Cheney... or Giuliani, should it come to that. Right?

- Continue to gut the environment to favor big business, weakening standards for air and water pollution, for safety in our food, for protection of wilderness areas.
- Continue to offer tax cuts and incentives to big business and the very rich while making the middle class pay, further eroding that class.
- Continue to ignore the healthcare crisis , offering bogus plans which will only serve to line the pockets of the pharmeceutical companies, the insurance companies and the corporations which own most of the hospitals in this country.
- Turn his sights on Iran with an eye to moving into the oil-rich areas of the former Soviet Union, and establishing a pipeline to the Persian Gulf.
- Appoint at least one Supreme Court justice who will further tip the balance of opinion in the court to the far right. The predictable result will be that well beyond his term in office, challenges to laws such as Roe vs Wade or the Patriot Act will be decided by people who may have more of an investment in one side or the other rather than in applying the law in a reasonable and non-partisan manner.
- Further damage our credibility in the international community by continuing to antagonize other countries with his administrations arrogant disregard for any point of view save one which benefits the U.S.
- Further erode public education in this country by offering no substantive aid to schools.
- Increase our budget deficit.
- If we do, in fact, end up attempting a military "solution" in Iran (and we will still be in Iraq and Afghanistan, presumably), will maintain the need for a draft.
- Further discourage immigration, particularly from third-world countries, by throwing up roadblocks in the name of homeland security.
- Also in the name of homeland security, further erode the freedoms of the American people, particularly (IMO) by finding ways around the prohibition on unreasonable search and seizure.
- Help to erode privacy for the average citizen, while increasing the opacity of the government, and of big corporations.

There's probably more, but I've run out of time. I need to get out of the house.
