Sunday Halloween offends some in Bible Belt.

There are so many things about this story that piss me off, I can't even start. Stop fucking up my favorite holiday, you asshats. *seethes*

Well...but technically Jews "shouldn't" celebrate Halloween anyway, so I don't think it would matter that much to the ones who do. Also, since you go Trick or Treating in the evening, and Jewish holidays end at sundown, it isn't technically the Jewish Sabbath anymore anyway.

But I don't think Bible Belters care much about Jewish holidays.

Ah, I never knew that.

I don't think the Bible Belters care about anything other then themselves.

Why exactly would that be? Is that like saying they shouldn't watch the Super Bowl or celebrate Labor Day? Halloween's not a religious holiday, any more than Memorial Day is. It's a social and populist one. Folks of any faith who have a problem with it are simply a few decades behind the times.

No it's not like that at all. Halloween does have Pagan roots, was not absorbed into any Jewish celebration like the Harvest holidays were, has no basis in the Bible, and is not a national American holiday like Memorial Day or Thanksgiving. Many religious Jews do not celebrate Halloween for the same reason that they don't celebrate Christmas or Kwanzaa - these are not Jewish holidays, nor are they American national holidays. Halloween is not a national holiday either, it's a social construction. No one gets days off for Halloween. Banks and federal offices aren't closed. It doesn't memorialize anyone or commemorate anything. That's not to say it isn't fun. :)

Many religious Jews are just as offended by Halloween as religious Christians, and for the same reasons.

Anyway, mandatory disclaimers - I'm Jewish but not Orthodox and I went trick or treating almost every year of my childhood.

I didn't mean to start a controversy. :)

Yeah, Halloween had pagan roots - and all of humanity had Eurasian roots. Modern democracy has Greek roots. Ancient history, and all that.

Sure, if any really existed.

she's saying "technically" as in "technically Halloween or All Hallows Eve also known as All Souls Day (and Eve to All Saints Day) is a Catholic Holiday" so "technically" it would be like Jews celebrating Christmas or Easter both of which have become remarkably secular over time.

the term Hallowe'en is a corruption of All Hallows Eve the Eve of All Saints Day which is christian(catholic)holiday, and they took it from the pagans who call it Samhain (one of the four greater sabbats), it's new year in the celtic calendar

NB I don't have any problem with Jews or anyone of any faith celebrating it even in the commercial way but it's inaccurate to say it's not religious, because it is religious in origin and for myself and most people(I know) of a pagan faith it's the most important religious holiday of the year.
