I watched five minutes of Wife Swap yesterday right before I started the Lost tape. I felt incredibly guilty about it, but I actually giggled a little when Lazy Junk-Food-Loving Mom was done walking through the home of Insanely Strict Military Mom and said, "It's like a military church ... with vegetarians in it."
I loved the reasoning. There is too much violence (in a war movie? I'm shocked) and the use the f word. In a country where 59M voted to maintain social values that couldn't possibly show such movie.
First of all I added you via ladybug218. And its funny my boss and coworker and I were just talking about this because I work for a TV Station and we just got done saying that people can pretty much control what we air because if there are complaints to the FCC that people don't like something being aired then they are pretty much dictating what we air. If that makes sense.
I can see their point. The FCC won't promise not to fine stations that air it, and ABC won't allow stations to air it at 10pm.
But I do think the stations that pulled it should air something like the following on a scroller throughout 'Return to Mayberry'.
"Dear viewers: because some of you won't take responsibility for your own family's viewing habits, we have been forced to replace the Oscar winning movie 'Saving Private Ryan' with this dreck. Enjoy!"
It's not the FCC. Those asshats are actually letting ABC run the program (thus being less asshatty than usual).
The decision to pull it is coming from various local affiliates who don't think their communities can handle hearing naughty language. Sadly, reading the article, I got the impression that the use of the word fuck is what's getting it pulled, not the appropriately horrific violence. Because remember kids: hurting and killing people is fine, so long as you don't use words we've deemed "bad" while doing it.

Side note: Our local ABC station, WSIL, is still running "Saving Private Ryan". At least, that's what the Dish Network program guide says. Either way, I'll still be watching WWE SmackDown!...
