Some dumbass lady just came in to ship something and seemed to be striving to drive me INSANE. I should have known she was trouble when we somehow started talking about writing, she said she was a writer, I mentioned NaNoWriMo, and when I explained to her what it was, she couldn't open her mouth fast enough to say "plagiarism" as many times as possible. Sheesh.

WTF? I thought NaNo was for original fiction only.

Naw. You can write anything. Lotsa fanfic. Just 50K

Huh. Now I REALLY don't see what the point of it is. o.O

...I'm sorry, that came out snippy. I meant, I thought the point was to challenge people to write original fiction, which (though I love and prefer to read fanfic myself) I thought was at least an interesting challenge/goal. Writing a FANFIC novel...just doesn't seem like anything special around here. :)

The point is to get the creative jucies flowing and write 50k in a certain amount of time.

Heh? WTF?

I can almost see the "hacks" accusation--it makes sense on some level--but plagiarism?

Wha...?

From: [identity profile] apocalypsos.livejournal.com
I'm pretty sure she thought part of writing the 50k was having to post it all online to prove you wrote it. I kept telling her no, but she was acting too snotty to listen.

Oh, well, that makes some sense at least, if she thought you were going to be plagiarized. I figured she was accusing Wrimos of plagiarizing, which I couldn't figure out.

*baffled* Plagiarism of WHAT? What's she talking about?

She thought you had to post it online to prove you wrote it. Uh, NO. (Not that she listened when I tried to tell her that. *sigh*)

Oh, good lord. That's worse than the person that kept asking me whether you HAD to join the contest if you did NaNo.

Unfortunately, no.

Even if you did post it online, if it's not fanfic, how is it plagiarism? I thought that was called self web publishing. This woman does not use our earth logic.

Date: 2004-11-15 05:55 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] apocalypsos.livejournal.com
I'm guessing that she thought as soon as you self-published, everybody on the planet would steal it and pretend it was theirs or something. *eye roll*

From: [identity profile] amand-r.livejournal.com
Not like that hasn't happened on the net, but god, she's a moron.

*Scratches head* How is NaNo plagiarism? Most of the novels are original.

From: [identity profile] apocalypsos.livejournal.com
She thought you had to post the stories online to prove you finished them and that everybody followed up posting their stories by going and stealing everybody else's. Or, you know, something. That was basically what I gleaned from her mindless ramblings.

From: [identity profile] dragonsinger.livejournal.com
Yikes! I don't think I ever want to read one of her books.

Okay, I am finally going to swallow up my pride and admit to my desperate ignorance... What IS NaNoWriMo???? It sounds important and it takes up a lot of your time and I feel like I should be vaguely aware and know more than "it's a writing thingie".

Care to help? ;)

National Novel Writing Month. http://www.nanowrimo.org dares you, her, me, and everyone to try and write a 50,000 word novel in the month of November. You have 15 days left, should you choose to accept the challenge this year.

Date: 2004-11-15 10:11 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] greenie-breizh.livejournal.com
Thanks for the explanation!! I think I'd actually heard about it before... And gee, I wish I could accept the challenge. But my school is like this evil lover (without the lover part) that would kill me at the idea that I might have free time, for starters, and then that I might be thinking about using it for anything but books I've been asked to read.

*sigh* I will remember it next year, though, if I can :)

Ah, you hadn't hear of it yet? More and more people around me are doing it each year. One has done so since a bunch of years.
I'm waiting for the day where *everybody* will be doing it. And then I will.... decline the invitation. ;-P
