ESPN2 is showing the US National Jump Rope championships, proving once and for that this country has officially run out of real sports.

EDIT: Okay, so double-dutch might be a sport. This, however, is not double-dutch. This is just ... just weird.

I have a friend who watched the National Tiddly-Winks compitition on ESPN2 a few years ago.

What I want are national games of childrens games as played by adults. "Hide and Seek", "Tag", and most importantly "Marco Polo" which I firmly believe should be an Olympic Sport.

I want to see a National Spit Championship. (Mostly because I would so be in the top ten.) Yay for organized chaos! :)

I would totally be in the top ten at Spit. That would be the coolest ever ever ever.

oh yeah. Penalties for not calling out Polo. Disqualifications if *caught* being a fish out of water even perhaps?

One of my friends swears that he has on tape the Rock-Paper-Scissors world championships. That they showed on ESPN. I think that trumps Jump Rope, but it's close.

I only halfway believe him. I'll believe the other half when he shows me that tape. I really really want to see it.

Your friend is right; I saw it on tv a few weeks ago. I found it hard to believe, myself, but I saw it right there in front of me. It was odd how serious everyone was about it!

A Rock/Paper/Scissors Championship?! Why didn't anybody tell me? I always win at that. Sheesh. :)

:is still reading the website: Apparently, there's strategy. There's even a strategy book. And some of it is gender-based.

Hunh. :is fascinated:

Watch this. It is amazing.

"Stay away from Street RPS"
"I first got into RPS to make decisions..."
"I got into it for the girls"

They take it SO seriously it's like a bad parody. But it's real!

o.o

But... no, that's a parody isn't it? That can't be real! It has to be a parody!

*moves firmly into denial, builds houseboat, weeps*

Is it bad that when I first read this, I read RPS as "Real Person Slash"?

You think that's bad? The Magic: The Gathering world championships were on ESPN. As much as I love the game, it's not a sport.

Hello there, I just thought I'd drop by to say that I stumbled across your journal via the rec for your wonderful X-Men MPREG story on [livejournal.com profile] crack_van and decided to friend you 'cause you seem like an interesting person.

Oh, and you have seen nothing until you have seen Wife Carrying World Championships (if the link doesn't work, go here and click on 'wife carrying').

You should try watching the show "Cheap Seats" on ESPN Classic some time. It's like an MST3K of old sports shows, hosted by Randy and Jason Sklar. The episode that's on right now is where they watch the 1997 Spelling Bee. Other episodes have featured World's Strongest Man and World's Strongest Woman competitions, bull-riding, lawnmower racing, putt-putt, pro wrestling, darts, NFL players teaming with pro billiards players to play pool (and the NFL guys were doing better!), Steve Garvey's celebrity billfishing tournament, and a bowling tournament with baseball players. And they've done four epsiodes with old Wide World of Sports footage.

As for stuff on the ESPN networks, there's a LOT of stuff that makes you wonder why they aired it. Around Christmas, they had the world Scrabble tournament, for example...
