[livejournal.com profile] cleolinda linked to a USA Today article about the best and worst movie endings. And hey, where the heck is The Usual Suspects? I could remember sitting in a theater at college watching that and everybody in the theater gasping at the exact same time. Oh, and The Shawshank Redemption, too. That was a lovely ending, and absolutely perfect.

In related movie musings, yesterday they were talking on the Don and Mike show about the most romantic movie scenes ever, which apparently was a poll done by Blockbuster. (And I won't even bother to mention what came up on the list, because all of them were lame.) Do you know what was my favorite romantic moment in the last few years? Ewan McGregor giving Alison Lohman a field full of daffodils in Big Fish. Just ... just ... *swoon*

Also, I bought the Oscars issue of Entertainment Weekly. The photos they used for Jamie Foxx, Johnny Depp, and Clive Owen are so very, very yummy, and I loved the ones they took of Catalina Sandino Moreno and Kate Winslet, but I swear, every photo of Hilary Swank made her look like a crossdresser. Urgh.

Has anyone ever seen Hilary Swank & Matt Damon together? Cuz I'm convinced that they are the same person!

The usual suspects is the best executed 'twist' ending EVER. Mmm.

Yes! And then you watch it a second time and are still impressed.

Fight Club had the best twist ending ever. Frankly, 'Usual Suspects' pretty much had no suspects at the end.

::laugh:: We leaned over to our 11 year old, and said, "If some boy acts like this to you, file a restraining order, sweetie."

I thought "Four Weddings and a Funeral" had several wonderful romantic moments, but my idea of romance probably doesn't jibe with most people's. I loved the character Tom saying "I never expected the thunderbolt. Just hoped I'd meet a nice friendly girl, like the look of her. Hope the look of me didn't make her physically ill. And settle down, raise a family, be happy."

Or the moment in "A Walk in the Clouds" where the male protagonist refuses to have sex because it will hurt the female protagonist...or later, when her father rages to him that "it's not even your baby she's carrying", and he replies, "It is if she'll have me."

Or...from my childhood, the moment from "The Empire Strikes Back" - "I love you." / "I know."

But then, I'm not big on romance - books or movies (you know, enough kissing, get on with the maiming!).

I had the same thought on the whole dafodils thing.

That bit was ruined for me by the whole... creepy stalker vibe that it would had set off for me.

^^;;

Jerry Maguire had cool romance bits.

Best endings?

"Dead Again" and "Sixth Sense" both totally blindsided me. :)

The origami unicorn at the end of BladeRunner (the directors cut) comes as quite a revelation.

I am still pleased I guessed the ending to The Usual Suspects. I NEVER figure it out.

My favorite movie ending might be Dark City's... which is romantic, in a way. But when I think Seriously Ridiculously Wonderfully Romantic For Reals, I think Big Eden. (Well, I think of a lot of movies. But Big Eden is particularly close to my heart.)

(Er, and hello. Me = random lurker.)

It really is one of those great movies that must be pimped whenever possible!

I still feel strangely vindicated whenever I see someone else complain about the end of A.I.

The movie that should have been on the best endings list in my book? City Lights (see also: most romantic moments list). No matter how many times I watch that movie the end still gets to me.

A.I. ended when the boy was rescued by his older friend from the water.

Anything after that point is a hoax perpetrated by very mean people who want to spoil a good movie.

I absolutely agree that the end to Being There is one of the most surreal, wonderful things to ever happen on film. More people should see this movie.

Last week's picture was bad enough. But this week, she's surrounded by Natalie Portman, Leo DiCaprio, Johnny Depp, Kate Winslet, and Jamie Foxx, all of whom look great.

Every time I see Hilary Swank I fight the urge to wave and say "It's Brandon! Eee! Hi, Brandon!"
One of these days I'll watch a movie she was in other than Boys Don't Cry. Maybe.
