Feb. 26th, 2005 08:40 pmI started my Oscar Movie Marathon early specifically so I could subsist solely on junk food and watch Forrest Gump on ABC. Ah, the joys of eating empty calories and watching cheesy crap. *happy sigh*
See, the fun comes the year I can't do this because I'm actually going to the Oscars. :)
EDIT: And who I think is going to win this year ...
Best Supporting Actor: You know, I wasn't sure back during the Golden Globes, but the closer it's gotten to the ceremony, the more I'm positive it's going to be Morgan Freeman. And here's hoping, damn it, because he needs to win for something.
Best Supporting Actress: If Cate Blanchett doesn't win, I'll throw things at my TV screen. And maybe cry.
Best Actor: Well, DUH. (And for the record, if they were giving a second-place Oscar in this category, I'd be rooting for Don Cheadle. Out of all five Best Actor performances, his was my second-favorite by a very close margin.)
Best Actress: Goddamn it, I want Kate Winslet to win, but it's going to end up being Hilary Swank, she'll get up there and wibble and thank everybody on the planet, and then she'll make some lame joke about not thanking her husband last time. Say what you will about Jamie Foxx being overexposed, but at least his acceptance speech is almost guaranteed not to suck.
Best Animated Film: If The Incredibles doesn't win this category, I reserve the right to hit something. I own Shrek 2 and I like it just fine, but PLEASE.
Best Director: I sincerely think this is going to be one of those years when the best director does not direct the next film. I'm pretty sure that if Scorcese wins, The Aviator is going to love, but if Eastwood takes it, Million Dollar Baby isn't going to win. Having said that, I really want Scorcese to win. They both deserve it, so I can't complain either way, but I really want to see Scorcese accept an Oscar. It's a goddamn crime that he and I have the same number of Best Director Oscars.
Best Picture: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Wait, what do you mean I have to pick from the list of nominees? Okay, fine. I'll give them credit this year, because I do genuinely like all five of the nominees (even if I think Eternal Sunshine kicks their collective asses), but having said that, I think Million Dollar Baby is going to win. I think its biggest competition is The Aviator, and I'd really like Sideways to win if only because comedies never win, but Ray and Finding Neverland don't stand a chance.

Date: 2005-02-27 03:31 am (UTC)I loved how it just let the characters exist and let the audience travel with them. And seeing places I have been to on film is always nice - there is much more to California than LA and Hollywood, and it was nice for someone to realize that.
Paul Giamatti may just be the next Thinking Woman's Sex Symbol at the rate his career is going. He does not have a stereotypically handsome face, but it is a very interesting one, and those are harder to come by.

Date: 2005-02-27 04:33 am (UTC)Gotta disagree-- okay, I haven't seen The Aviator, and I do really like Cate Blanchett, but Sophie Okonedo ripped my heart out in Hotel Rwanda. I'd love to see her take it. Unfortunately it'll probably be Natalie Portman (who I do really like, but for some reason without even seeing it I find Closer overrated).
I saw Million Dollar Baby today and think Hilary Swank would probably deserve the win, if Kate Winslett hadn't been nominated. Kate should take it, but I bet Hilary will. I haven't seen any of the other movies nominated in that category.
Personally, and I know I'm in the minority, but I find Jamie Foxx's performance in Ray to be very overrated, and I really don't want him to win, though he is a shoe-in it would seem. I think Don Cheadle would deserve it, or else Clint Eastwood, who was really good in MDB.
Also, I am bitter that Hotel Rwanda was robbed of a Best Picture nom. Okay, I am in love with Johnny Depp as much as the next fangirl, really, but somehow I find myself doubting that Finding Neverland was a better film than Hotel Rwanda. Though to be fair, I haven't seen it.

Date: 2005-02-27 04:46 am (UTC)In the Best Actress category, I haven't managed to see Annette Bening's performance or Imelda Staunton's, which is why I'll be annoyed if Annette Bening wins. Dude, someone should have seen your movie before you win. It should be a rule. Hilary was good enough where I won't be pissed if she wins, Kate was amazing and deserves to get an Oscar already, damn it, and if you haven't see Maria Full of Grace, you HAVE to rent it. I own it and I am so glad I do, because that is an absolutely note-perfect debut performance.
And to be honest, I loved Ray, but if I could have, I would have replaced it with Hotel Rwanda (God, I watched the trailer again today, and I still burst into tears) and I would have replaced Finding Neverland with Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Although seriously, give Finding Neverland a chance -- it's a lovely movie with a beautiful story, and Johnny Depp and Kate Winslet are divine in it. (Not to mention Freddie Highmore, who will just break your heart. His performance and his chemistry with Johnny bode very well for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.)

Date: 2005-02-27 05:56 am (UTC)Oh, I'm sure that once I've seen it I will adore Finding Neverland. Kate and Johnny? Might be one of the best actress/actor combinations that can come to mind. I love both of them and the premise of the movie seems lovely. I've just heard that it is one of the lower-caliber Oscar nominated movies, and I know people have said the noms are most likely due to the Academy's fondness for sentimentality.
Honestly, I didn't even finish watching Ray. I liked Jamie Foxx to begin with, but I've found that lately he seems to be in the mindset that he is the next Ray Charles or something (like at the Grammys), which I personally find grating (kind of like when Christina Aguilera did a photo spread where she dressed up like Marilyn Monroe and did all the same poses). And I found his performance to feel almost like a caricature of Ray Charles.
Honestly, I would even replace Million Dollar Baby with Hotel Rwanda. It's the best movie I've seen in a long time, and more than any others I've seen this year, it had the ability to suck me in so far that I forgot the actors were actors at all.
