OMG, I want to give Hurley a hug so very, very badly.

So, I'll talk about everybody else later, but I really wanted to get into The Numbers. The first thing I did was add the numbers together --

4+8+15+16+23+42 = 108
1+0+8 = 9

I was kinda thinking it'd be seven, but okay. Then I added the single digits together --

4+8+1+5+1+6+2+3+4+2= 36
3+6 = 9

And "Hugo Reyes" does have nine letters in it.

So, what's so important about the number nine? According to Wikipedia, nine is an unlucky number in Japanese culture but a lucky one in Chinese culture. (It certainly mirrors the duality of the The Numbers's good luck/bad luck influence.) Also, from the numerology entry == Nine was considered to be a sacred number by the ancients and was consequently not assigned a numerical equivalent to any letter in the Chaldean alphabet. It represents change, invention and growth which springs forth from inspiration. Nine has traditionally held esoteric significance which is evidenced by the fact that it takes nine calendar months to bring a baby into the world from its initial conception.

And from this website ...

9 - UNIVERSAL

Traits:generalist, multi-talented, teacher HUMANITARIAN, healer, artist, old-soul, actor

The number 9 symbolizes the principle of a universal philosophy or consciousness. It is the dreamer, and feels at home in the realm of the arts, medicine, religion, drama, and philosophy and metaphysics. It is a healer and educator, acting always for the benefit of others. The 9 looks for solutions from the inspirational, intuitive, and creative worlds. Its energy is loving, compassionate, diffuse, and global.

Gifts: Understanding, communicating, influencing

Challenges: Drifting, tolerance, losing focus, bad habits

Personal Goal: To make an impact in a big way; expansion

Fears: Restriction of any kind, losing control of emotions

Succeeds as: Minister, occultist, health/body worker, counselor, artist/craftsperson, world/community leader

So, you know. There it is. :)

In other episode-related news, I mostly just spent the entire episode saying, "Aw, you poor baby!" Although, when he hugged Rousseau, I just about died. And remember when Scott died, and he was so depressed about it? If he blames himself for the plane crash, I'm sure he blamed himself for that, too. *cuddles my adorable incredibly rich woobie*

Well, of course Charlie didn't believe him. But still, doofy Charlie. When you guys get home, you definitely need to buy him something incredibly expensive, Hurley. You know, just as long as the curse is gone when you get off the island. (I believe you, baby!)

Also, Locke made Claire a cradle. I repeat, Locke made Claire a cradle. Because he's going to be so amazingly creepy in the future, we're going to need "Well, he did make Claire that cradle for the demonspawn" to fall back on. :)

EDIT: Oh, good God, [livejournal.com profile] literarylemming said something about needing to cuddle Hurley, and just seeing somebody else say it makes me want to go to the fabric store this weekend, buy some stuffing, fabric, and doll hair, and make myself a Hurley. (Now, I just need to get paid tomorrow. Like, for real, this time.)

I know, and I've been trying to figure out where to get the nine in there, but:

8+1+5=14=1+4=5
81+5=86=8+6=14=1+4=5
8+15=23=2+3=5

Oh, crap, not another pattern. *headdesk* And here I swore this morning that I wasn't going to do any more math for the rest of my life ...

Why, because every combo = 5? I'm not certain, but I think any three digits, added any which way until you only have a single digit, will always have the same answer (for that set of 3 digits.)

Okay. Here's an idea.

4 people died on the island from flight 815. 16 live on the beach. 23 live in the caves. = 42

Of course, it could go 16 caves and 23 beach.. but there you go. I think 4 people have died, but I'm not sure. Anyhow, that's my theory.

There were more people that died than that. Remember the memorial service near the start? Although, if you just start counting after the plane crash, I guess that theory'd work...

47 survived, plus Ethan and Rousseau. However, the swimming lady and Scott have died, and Ethan, so atm, they're at 46, yes. However, there is no two.

I wondered if maybe the flight took off from gate 4 at 16:23 and that when they get down to really only 42 people something interesting will happen. Because this would be no more insane than any other rationale.

Long-ass comment...

Date: 2005-03-03 06:43 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] tenebris.livejournal.com
This is all literary theory stuff, taught by my crazy AP English teacher, so it may not be all correct...

The numbers 3, 4, 6, 7, and 9 all have large roles to play in literary symbolism. 3 is the number of the Dreamer, the Sensitive person, the one who can't quite connect to reality. 4 is the number of the Realist, so grounded in reality that there is no spirituality to them. Thus, add those two numbers together and get 7, which is the number of the balanced person, and also God (and therefore the number for the Christ-like characters). 6, therefore, is the number of man, as it is one less than God. 9 is the symbol of the villian, the overeacher, they who will try to 'overthrow the throne of heaven', sometimes in a more metaphorical sense than not.

So the consistant association of those numbers with 9 would, in literary symbolism, be a sign of doom. DOOOOOM.

On another track, the sequence in pairs breaks down to:
doubled (4 - 8)
plus one (15 - 16--also eight, doubled)
plus one, reversed. (23 - 42) (last number is 15 doubled plus the first two numbers added together)

Not only that (and hey, fun with coincidences!), the last number of the pair + seven is the first number of the second pair.

(I have a feeling JJ and David Fury are snickering like girls at all this right now. Which I would do, if I were in their place, so...;) )

Last note: I, too, wanted to cuddle Hurley. The prevelant theme at the Cleolinda recap right now is that he was IN that hospital. Which, *sniff!*

Rule of nine’s in pricing

Date: 2005-03-03 04:47 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] milferd.livejournal.com
Yep before fancy computer registers many retailers used the “rule of nine“ to help control inventory loss. By having the last digit of an item you were tracking be a nine it would help you tell how many units should have been sold to help prevent employee theft . Worked best when only a few items where tracked to control sales like at Subway about twenty years ago they counted the pieces of bread, cups, cookies and chips as a total.

The cradle thing was weird--evidently my brother and my father had been watching the show from the beginning(with, I'm guessing, shots of the cradle as it was being put together), and yet didn't recognize what the hell it was until Locke turned it rightside up at the very end of the show.

Meanwhile I, who walked down halfway through and was watching the show out of the corner of my eye while doing things online, recognized it for what it was the second I saw it, while it was still upside down. And I'm utterly baffled how my brother, my father, and Claire all somehow missed it until it was rightside up.

(Although for the powers of observation my brother and my father have--they watch the show every week, religiously, whereas I only catch occasional glimpses of it, and then I say something like "Michael is totally going to die" and they ask me "which one is Michael?" My family, I ask you.)

Lost is one of those shows I like from a distance, because if I get attached to it they're going to kill off Sawyer because I like him and then I'll be miserable. So I actually try to avoid watching it, although I always seem to wind up watching the second half of the show regardless.

Also, Locke made Claire a cradle. I repeat, Locke made Claire a cradle. Because he's going to be so amazingly creepy in the future, we're going to need "Well, he did make Claire that cradle for the demonspawn" to fall back on.

I kept on remembering Claire's dream from Raised By Another and how she saw Locke and cradle/crib in the dream. I get the feeling that she would have been warier of Locke if she'd remembered the dream. Can't tell what's going on with Locke, but I suspect the cradle wasn't a completely selfless gesture.

I found this interesting take on a website. take as you see fit:

4+8+15+16+23 = 66 (42) = (4+2)= 6

= 666

Eeek! Bad things must be coming to the show!
