Holy crap. So I spotted a link on [livejournal.com profile] lost_news to this TWoP thread regarding what Boone heard over the radio, so I put in "Deus Ex Machina" again just out of curiosity, and if you listen really carefully, it really wasn't, "There were no survivors of Oceanic Flight 815," it's, "No, we're the survivors of Flight 815!" And aside from the use of the word "transmission," which doesn't really sound like a word he'd use, the voice does sound a hell of a lot like Boone, especially towards the end.

What the hell?! This show is seriously fucking with my brain. *shakes my head and goes back to writing more of the 10.5 summary*

Yeah, I saw that. Freaky!

With that, and post about the numbers from the side of the hatch being coordinates for somewhere in Nigeria, I'm all OMGWTF.

I know! I've listened to it a dozen times since I read that and now I can't believe I thought it was the first one. It's distinct when you're actually listening specifically to it.

OK, I just listened to the clip and read all those pages on the forum. It's bugging the crap out of me that I can't reply (not a member) and say how obvious it is that the "second" clip is a different take. A pre- or mid-production take of Boone and Locke running their lines with someone else just READING the parts of the voice on the radio.

Is that not obvious?

And yes. The voice on the radio DID say "No, WE'RE the survivors..."

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH

Now that I listen to it again without the running commentary of "Boone, get out of the plane!! Just get out of the *&!%# plane!!" that is what it says.

And my friend says it almost sounds like Hurley's voice answering. Stranger things could happen with this show...

I can't decide whether it sounds like Boone or like Hurley to me. It does sound like one of them, though, and that's what's killing me.

I swear ... this show, this evil, twisted, wonderful show.

Eeee! If that is Boone, that raises his chances of surviving next week significantly, doesn't it? Or at least I hope so. I don't know the logic of time farts that well.

On the other hand, this means that someone else is going to croak it. When did I start loving Boone so?

From: [identity profile] etoilepb.livejournal.com
I don't think it particularly sounds like either Boone or Hurley.

But holy crap I love this show. (Though for what it's worth, I still think that it's a little too similar to Michael Crichton's Sphere at times, with a potential -- but not a certainty -- for that here, too.) Am so glad there's a new ep this week.

I dunno. I used the link in the TWoP thread and while I agree the voice is saying "Hello? *mumblemumble* survivors of Flight 8-1-5!" I don't think that the *mumblemumble* is "we're". There are too many syllables. But apparently the transmission on the show and the transmission on the recap vid don't exactly match up. People are claiming that the recap transmission is clearer/cleaned up and possibly re-voiced. I wouldn't be surprised it TPTB deliberately played different words in order to screw with our collective head. Silly PTB! My head is ALREADY screwed up! :-p

From: [identity profile] apocalypsos.livejournal.com
The thing is (and I haven't even listened to the link in the clip yet) in the episode, the difference between "Hello?! We're the survivors ..." and "No, we're the survivors ..." is more of an argument than whether or not it's "we're". I just listened to it again about six times in a row just to make sure, and what it ends up sounding like is "No, we're the survivors of Oceanic Flight 815," with the word "No" being the biggest question mark because Locke chooses that moment to yell, "Get out!"

Here's what's driving me nuts, though: the closed-captioning clearly says "There were no survivors of Flight 815." I know this, because I am the kind of dork who leaves her closed captioning on all the time. And it's not really the kind of thing JJ Abrams and Co. would mess up on, so it's either an intentional mislead or someone on the crew is *so* fired.

Dammit, Abrams! Stop messing with me already!

Date: 2005-04-04 07:48 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] myniamh.livejournal.com
hmm, just re-watched my copy. God, that light freaks me out!
It doesn't sound so much like "There are no survivors ..." or "We are the ..." It does however sound exactly like Boon saying it. Exactly.
I think it might be that they haven't cast the 'other' survivors yet and wanted a 'cast' voice, it's just them playing with our heads again or that big black rock is doing something with transmissions.
I'm wondering just how long that thing has been in the ground, no rust on it, it doesn't look like an old metal and resembles an air lock! So there are other clues for the 'time' theories going around.

Apparently it's been confirmed by Lindelof (sp? I'm too lazy to check) that they do indeed actually say "No, we're the blah....".

[livejournal.com profile] lost_news brings all the goods to the yard, see? I'm too fuckin tired to write anything coherent.

Date: 2005-04-04 11:40 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] snellios.livejournal.com
Although, note how closed captioning thinks it's "there were no survivors..."

Date: 2005-04-04 12:51 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] apocalypsos.livejournal.com
The thing with closed captioning is that sometimes, they don't get to type that up until right before the show airs. And I've seen closed captioning that's way, waaaaaay off, so I wouldn't trust closed captioning on something like this.

Date: 2005-04-04 12:56 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] apocalypsos.livejournal.com
Yeah, but the closed captioning can sometimes be really wrong. It's not like they're copying from the script, they're copying what they hear, and until Lindehof said something and the fans listened closer, even we thought it was "There are no ..." I used to turn off the volume on my TV and turn on the closed captioning in high school when I was grounded and not supposed to watch TV, and I've seen the closed captioning even on popular movies be really way off.

The interesting thing is that the books that Sawyer reads tie in with the episode, somehow. And in this episode, he's reading A Wrinkle in Time.

Damn, because back when a friend linked to the Mapquest of the magic numbers being about where the island probably is if one swaps 16 for -160 and I played with it and got somewhere in Africa I just figured, "Well, -160 isn't a potential lottery number, so that's why the writers changed it," and didn't go any further with the idea. Then again, in "Numbers" there wasn't a known Nigerian connection yet...

But what did Boone say? Is it possible that part of his signal was just bounced back? Or some evil Ethan-type was playing the shadow game to fuck with him. (Is that what it's called? When you repeat everything the other person says?)

So many possibilities... Is it Wednesday yet?

Oh. I guess it is.

I really, really wish that I had taped it.

Nope, it wasn't a bounce back, trust me. Both versions of "we're the survivors of Oceanic Flight 815" had two entirely different inflections to them.

"Hello, we're the survivors of Oceanic Flight 815 --" (Frantic, but strong)
"No, we're the survivors of Oceanic Flight 815." (Surprised, baffled, and totally confused)
