Apr. 8th, 2005 10:27 amFirst up, some movie trailers ...
Night Watch -- DUDE. That's just creepy and scary and pretty and GYAH. Either that movie will be wickedly cool, or it's going to suck.
Kingdom of Heaven -- That one's got new footage. Oh, please let this movie turn out to be good. *crosses fingers*
The Skeleton Key -- A Kate Hudson movie? Meh.
The home of the woman who found the fingertip in her chili at Wendy's is being searched by police. -- I understand the police have to follow all leads, but that's got to suck as long as she's innocent of any wrongdoing.
A Hong Kong hiker washed her face in a freshwater stream, not noticing that leech had wormed its way into one of her nostrils, according to the Hong Kong Medical Journal. -- I believe the correct response is, EWWWWWWWW.
A thief who stole 25 shoes got a little less than he or she bargained for after realizing they were all for left feet. -- See, this is where you get creative and find a woman with one leg and a full pocketbook.
The late Pope John Paul regretted not praying for his native Poland during the 1982 World Cup finals in Spain, according to former Poland and Juventus playmaker Zbigniew Boniek. -- Hee. I like that thought about the Pope. That's such a guy thing. "I'm the Pope, man! I could have pulled some strings!" :)
Scientists say the odds of another catastrophic volcanic eruption in Yellowstone within anyone's lifetime are extraordinarily remote, but that's exactly what happens in a made-for-television movie that will air this Sunday. -- No, damn it! I want it to explode, you stupid scientists, and you haven't seen my track record for making disasters happen through sheer force of will!
And in related disaster-esque news, an article on the new TV show "Revelations".
Also, to the anonymous person who gave me stuff, YAY! Thanks. :) *pounces on you, shags like mad*

Date: 2005-04-08 10:26 pm (UTC)*They’re even talking about a possible Oscar for Orlando later on… dear lord. Needless to say, looks GREAT.
I just got back from the screening of Kingdom of Heaven, which turned out not to be a test screening. It was being screened for a very large group of press. So what I saw was the completed film. It ran about two and one-half hours long.
KoH is everything Troy and Alexander weren’t. A realistic, superbly acted, and visually stunning epic. I thoroughly enjoyed ever minute of it. Scott’s strong point is his way with visuals, and there were plenty of breathtaking scenes. One in particular that I don’t want to spoil, but I’d never seen anything like it. It was haunting.
But the visuals didn’t distract from the story, which was a little hard to follow in the beginning, but was a good one none the less. There was no cheesy dialogue, and the touches of humor came out naturally from the characters. There were no goofy sidekicks and one liners, a la Braveheart. This is a serious film, and writer William Monahan put me back in the 12th century and kept me there. If there’s one thing I hate, it’s being yanked out of a film because the dialogue doesn’t stay in line with the period.
Some of the supporting characters didn’t have as big a parts as I would have hoped, but that was because they were so well acted that I wanted to see more of them. But then the film would have been four hours long, so it’s for the best. I’m speaking of Liam Neeson, Jeremy Irons, David Thewlis, and Edward Norton. Norton was a huge surprise. We never see his face, but what he did with his voice, amazing! Neeson was a little type cast as the father, but he does it well and brought a lot of emotion to his part, small as it was. Iron’s was wonderful, but again, I would have liked to have seen him in a bigger role. The same with Thewlis. Some of the lesser known (to me) actors had much more to do with the story, and were just as good as the major stars in the film. Particularly Marton Csokas, and Ghassan Massoud. Brendan Gleeson needs to stop playing the same role. He wasn’t bad at all, but it’s the same role he played in Troy.
My biggest worry was Orlando Bloom. I needn’t have worried. He was great. He carried the film, and proved that not only can he act, he has presence on film. His performance is quiet and subtle when need be, ferocious in the heat of battle, but never over played. Eva Green had a bigger part than I expected, and is quite good. I suspect we’ll see a lot more of her.
It was less violent then I thought it would be, considering the subject matter. The Crusades were particularly vicious, but that might be due to the fact that I just saw Sin City. The battle scenes were shot with Scott’s trademark camera moves when close up, lots of shaky cameras, slow motion, then speeding up. These were huge battles, fought by masses amount of troops, and the long distance shots were just incredible.
I wouldn’t call KoH a masterpiece compared to some of Scott’s other films. It was a little lacking in the emotional department at times. I liked it more than Gladiator, maybe a tad less than Black Hawk Down, if I were comparing his war films. It was definitely my favorite film so far this year.
