Don't worry, you don't have to explain unschooling to me. I was unschooled until age nine, when my dad began his journey into insanity (he is now learning ballroom dancing and dating a Mormon) by insisting that my brothers and I attend some kind of structured school environment. I went to the Waldorf school for a little less than a year, at which point I was kicked out for "questioning authority." Then I did ISP for a year, decided I didn't like it and started taking college classes. I'm now about halfway to getting my AA degree. The thing that bugs me most about people who think that homeschoolers have no social lives is that they've been proven wrong by multiple studies and still won't believe it. *shakes head*

I haven't been to any SCA meetings, but I've been told many times that I should. At this point, it's merely a question of getting my lazy butt out of the house.

The best cookies I've ever had were vegan. I made them out of a sugar cookie recipe, a bag of chopped coconut and a little improvisation.

Not very, no. I've met many reasonable fans. Normal fans, not so much.

Actually, what takes forever to explain is the fact that I'm not totally unschooled, as I have to get credits to graduate with a real diploma and blah-di-blah, but I don't have any sort of set curriculum and I teach myself a lot of the stuff.

Okay, your story's way more complicated than mine. I've been in Clonlara ever since my mom pulled me out of school toward the end of first grade. My mother has to push me to do the actual schooly stuff (keep track of my hours, do math, writing assignments, that sort), but most of the rest is self-taught.

See, what's sad is that it's true for me. My RL social life is essentially SCA and the other unschool family that lives about a mile away.

I can't promise you'll love it, because every group is different. Some people have had terrible experiences. I was lucky enough to end up with a very friendly group (Gwyntarian).

Hee. I'm looking to try some vegan recipes this year, from our garden (I've been vegetarian off and on, but most of the time it's been just from a sheer lack of desire to eat meat). And, duh, it just occurred to me that my favourite dish I make is vegan. And mostly organic.

Though, given enough incentive I can be a fan of anything. I hate Lost and I'm still a fan because the fandom is fun.

That's an independent studies program, isn't it? My mom mentioned it as a possibility when my dad went ballistic about school, but I never really heard anything else about it. I guess that would explain the diploma thing. Out of curiosity, how old are you?

Associate in Arts. It's the lowest college degree you can earn. Technically, as the degree takes two years to earn, I should have finished it last summer, but this is the first semester I've taken more than two courses at once.

I've been vegetarian since I saw four baby chicks grow from wet puffballs to actual birds, over the course of a week, when I was four. I promptly decided that I would not eat meat ever again, and (aside from the half-a-shrimp I accidentally ate once because I was misinformed about the contents of an eggroll) I haven't. I'm only vegan for health, though, and I'm not nearly as strict about it as I am about meat.

Awww, you don't like HP? I agree that the movies are terrible and should be blasted to smithereens and shot into space for some other unlucky species to discover, but the books aren't half bad. J.K. Rowling is honestly not that good a writer, but the world and characters she's created are, IMHO, marvelous.

I really don't like the show all that much either. I think I only still follow it in the hopes of another Sawyer/Sayid torture scene. And too much free time, but hey, it's my free time.
