Methinks I'm enjoying the prospect of apartment shopping waaaaay too much. I think it might be mostly the "shopping" bit of the apartment shopping that's hooking me. :)

It's easy to get fun out of picking out gorgeous plates, pan sets and furniture. It is for me, anyway.

See, I can sympathise with fun picking out pots & pans. Not furniture and plates, though. I think it's that pans come under the headings of "Tools, want good ones of" and "Gadgets, Shiny" for me. Calphalon One nonstick chef's pans are the Best Pans Ever, incidentally. Right shape, useful handles, extremely good materials. And you can use metal utensils in them, and there's no coating that comes off after a year or two. Make damn sure you get them on sale, though, prices vary with at least 50% downwards mobility, and these things are fricking expensive.
