Dear Mom,

Responding to my complaints about my job with, "Well, that's what work is," is NOT COOL. Let's not even get into the fact that both of your children have strong work ethics to the point where we barely ever call off and have both worked two jobs at the same time more than once in our lives, and that I would probably be working two jobs right now if I had a different job.

How about we just stick with my being tired and sore for the past three weeks straight, having to work eight extra hours every shift and only getting paid for thirty-six hours some weeks due to the schedule, never being allowed to sit down, sometimes getting one of my breaks taken away because my machine breaks down, and just generally being not in a good mood? Because when I'm looking back at DHL with fondness, that is sooooo not right.

Sincerely,

Your daughter

Aren't you working around 48? I'm pretty sure that's about eight different kinds of illegal. And, yeah, this job sounds like it blows goats in a big way.

When I worked at this one shitty place for three years, my dad would always be like, "Well, that's just how it goes," but I think he just said that because 1) he didn't really understand how strange and wrong that place was and 2) he didn't want me going around quitting shit all the time.

I know this is a crazy idea, but why don't you look for a new job? Are there book/music/movie stores close to where you live? That sounds like a job you might like. There are plenty of jobs that will pay your bills and not such like this job. Unless this job is going to take you somewhere super cool, it's not worth putting up with.

just my opinion, of course

Oh, I've been looking for another job. I've applied everywhere that I could think of. So far, the jobs around here have had some impeccable timing, because as soon as I got a job, the other ones I was qualified for dried up.

Well, keep up the job hunting on the side and, if possible, keep up the optimism. Each app is a seed planted somewhere and you never know when one will sprout. Also, being the end of the year, real jobs (as opposed to the part-time, seasonal ones) are somewhat harder to come by. That said, I'll just toss a few hugs and attagirls your way and say a prayer or three (and maybe sacrifice a chicken or two) in hopes that something *wonderful* drops in your lap before your legs give out.

Oh, yeah . . . and, I think I'm going to print out your post and staple it to my forehead. Maybe, that way, I'll remember it the next time words like that start to tumble out of my mouth when my daughter bitches about her job. I *really* hadn't thought about how very annoying and patronizing it sounds 'til I read it. Ugh! No wonder she has such a burning desire to brain me from time to time! :} *sigh* Thanks for the reality check.
