[Poll #708852]

EDIT: For the record, I honestly didn't know you could just take them home and eat them until I was a teenager. I thought you had to slice open the plastic wrapping when you got them into the kitchen and leave them to sit there for a week.

What the heck are Peeps?

Peeps are little marshmallow candies covered in colored sugar, the most popular of which are yellow chicks. They're all over the place in the US during Easter. As far as I can tell, there's four ways to eat them -- fresh, stale, nuked in a microwave, or vehemently not.

lmfao I read that as "people taste better stale" and I thought "OMG SHE'S A CANNIBAL!!"

...I read it as "people" too, for a moment.

Soylent peeps are people?

option no. 1 all the way, man! there's a process there, and you don't fuck with the process.

Dude, I ate a Peep fresh once, and it was so gross. Never again!

*snickers* Your mom, too? That's where I got it from. ;)

I saw the electric red peeps for the first time this week.

I like to make them grow in the microwave and then I feed them to my roommate's cats. HAH.

Haven't tried melting one in a cup of (very hot!) coffee, but it's on my list of Things To Do This Spring.

If my vegetarian fiance (who doesn't eat gelatin) will even let them in the house...

Peeps are oddly shaped stuffed animals with very, very soft plush.

I've never had the other kind.

I like them stale but I also like them fresh - it was a hard decision!

And I would like to sue you for false advertising - that is not a ticky box missy! *shakes fist*

when I read Peeps, I immediatly thought of online terms. Not the disgusting sugar coated marshmellow thingies.

I have Peeps from three years ago. I think they might be ripe now.

It's not just that I hate peeps. I can't stand marshmallows--the texture makes me gag and they're way way WAY too sweet.

My improv group plays a game called Marshmellow, in which we attempt to play a scene straight, and anyone who gets a laugh has a marshmellow crammed into their mouth (a marshmellow that he/she can't swallow). The game quickly descends into us all making unintelligible noises around a mouthful of mush. Hilarity.

This month, we celebrated Easter by using Peeps instead of marshmellows, and as the first one went in, I realized I'd never actually eaten a Peep before (only microwaved them). Members of the audience said my face was completely priceless in its expression of shock and digust.

I had to think about this. Clearly I have been subjected to too many stories in which Suethors refer to their friends as "peeps." (I think it's short for "people.")

I was hoping you were just thinking of a zombie story involving Sam and Dean...

The tradition at my college was the week before finals for the Seniors to TP the main building and surrounding green. And when it was our turn, we had some leftover Easter Peeps and put them in the fountain (along with a lot of detergent). When you put peeps in water, they grow gigantic before they turn into blobs of goo. It was awesome.

Thank you for reminding me I have a package of Peeps from last year.

Last year's batch of Peeps had some kind of freaky preservative in them; my friend Kat and I both attempted to age our peeps properly (plastic slit open, stuffed up on top of the fridge and forgotten for a month), and utterly failed. Month-old Peeps with the proper ventilation ... and they were still fresh. Very frightening and surreal. We returned them to the tops of our respective fridges, waited another month. Still fresh, soft, and delicately squishy with no hint of crunch.

This year's batch is fine. I made sure to buy a small package and test them ahead of time, and they aged as usual.

I think last year was the year my mother bought Peeps and they wouldn't go stale because of that stupid preservative, so she fired off an angry letter to the company and told them how much it pissed her off that they wouldn't harden up.

I wonder how many people complained about their Peeps staying fresh. It must have been a fair amount; they did change the formula back.
