I went to my junior prom, was horribly bored, and rather than going to my senior prom cut all my hair off and went to see Anger Management instead. Believe me, that last one embarasses me, also.
On Senior Skip Day, I went to go see Highlander III. I would be more embarassed if the party everybody else went to hadn't gotten busted by the cops. HEE. :)
Ha! That's awesome. I was actually geeky enough to go to school on senior skip day. But, being present did get me out of having to take two different exams, so I could skip merrily out of the school at the end of May while my friends were grumbling on the way to tackle Western Civ. It all balances out in the end. :)
We had a new principal that year, and he gathered all the seniors up and said if we skipped, we'd get suspended. And when we all went to our next classes, our teachers basically told us that if we came in for Senior Skip Day, they'd kick our asses.
We skipped. We liked them better than the new guy anyway, and the fact that he never really carried through with the threat in the end was awesome. ;)
In your senior year, all of the seniors skip school on one day, usually the same day of the school year as the year of their graduation. (Ours was the ninety-fifth.) You're not supposed to do it, obviously, but that never stops anyone. :)
I only went 'cause a friend's mom COMPLETELY WIGGED OUT when she heard I wasn't planning on it, bought tickets, loaned me a dress, bought me shoes, whole nine yards. Poor John was like... "*blink* She really wants you to go. A lot. Please say yes so she'll stop flipping out?"
I found out later it was probably a good idea I hadn't gone, because two of my best friends were dating and she flipped out because he was prom king and she wasn't prom queen. She was an awesome best friend, but she definitely had her dramatic moments.
Addendum: I did go to my first-year fall formal at the college I went to when I was 18, and also their spring dance. My date to the spring dance was two years old and was easily the most popular dance partner there.
When he's old enough (he's only 8 now), I'm going to let that kid know how many boobs he squeezed that night.
I'm pretty sure that at the time I didn't see the point, it being little more than a popularity filter, and ended up staying home. With a book. *rolls eyes*
I never went to mine, but I did go to the proms of three different people from two different schools, one junior year, one senior year, and one in my sophomore year of college (last night!). The best one I went to was held at a science center, so when you got tired of dancing you could go shock your date with the Van de Graaf generators or demonstrate how osmosis worked.
Australians don't have proms. I went to my year 12 formal, though. It was deadly boring. The one conversation, times all the girls in the room: "Hi, love your dress." "Thanks! You look great too! Have you seen so-and-so?"
In my handbag (purchased for the occasion, because I didn't own one, and my huge, decrepit backpack didn't go with the dress) I brought a book and a peanut butter sandwich.
My date was a teddy bear. I brought him with me, and introduced him to everyone as my date. "This is Bunthorne. He's my date." The only intelligent conversation I got all evening was from Bunthorne, and Bunthorne does not talk.
I didn't go to mine. I did go to my friend's - not as a date, but so we could enter a duct tape-sponsored scholarship. We made my dress and his tuxedo out of duct tape, took pictures beforehand, and went for the dinner. We didn't win the scholarship but had a reasonable amount of fun, mostly from people asking us about what we were wearing.
I went to mine, but you have to understand something...
My formative years included the Brat Pack movies (16 Candles, Some Kind of Wonderful, Breakfast Club, and Pretty in Pink).
Now, despite the fact that Pretty in Pink was the least favorite of all of the John Hughes movies, there's a point in it when Molly Ringwald's character Andie talks about not going to the prom:
Andie mentions that she might not go to the prom. Iona: I have this girlfriend who didn't go to hers, and every once in a while, she gets this really terrible feeling--you know, like something is missing. She checks her purse, and then she checks her keys. She counts her kids, she goes crazy, and then she realizes that nothing is missing. She decided it was side effects from skipping the prom.
So yes. That's why I went to the prom. (With two dates, my neighbor Stacy and our good friend Tim - totally platonic) Our prom was held in our HS multipurpose room and was kind of lame, but I don't regret going at all.
(I was also treated to dinner with my father, and it's one of my cherished memories now that he's gone.)
I didn't go to mine. I was taking all my classes in college instead by that point and was kind of oblivious to the whole thing. I found out later that they held our prom at the Space Needle, which would've been kind of cool, but oh, well....
I didn't go to my university graduation, either. I was at a concert in Minnesota, oddly enough. ;)
i never wanted to go. but friends forced me, that evening i ended up just no doubt pushing vital organs further along the path to givin'-up-on-meh, in my quest for happiness (drank just a tad too much). goddang i hate such forced social events. love spontaneous shit. but bleh. proms can suck mah !@#@
Me and the rest of my anti-prom posse didn't go either, we had our own little get-together where we watched tv, X-Files and such if I remember rightly, and went walking through the fields in the dark of night and BSed.
I've never been to a school dance at all. There was this one time at TAG camp, but...considering I twisted my ankle in the conga line, I try not to think about it too often.
I have no actual memory to tell me if I went to school on Senior Skip Day or not, but I'd guess I just went to school. If it had to do with school spirit, I always opted out, and never regretted it for a moment.
proms are overrated...they're really a chance for the "popular" people to show off how much money they have...i got together with my friends & watched smut...much more enjoyable evening
