I CALL FOUL.

When Sam is describing what H. H. Holmes used to do to his victims in the murder castle, he shifts around a couple of photos, the first a rather grainy picture of a body, and the second a VERY recognizable photo of a victim -- one of Jack the Ripper's victims, Elizabeth Stride.

I wonder what it says about me that I can identify serial killer/mass murderer (for the most part) given an autopsy photo or shot of the crime scene. That I'm creepier than the average bear, I imagine.

I really should have been a crim major in college. *sigh*

Told you I was going to nitpick.

*headdesk* That's why she looked familiar! I know about Jack the Ripper but I know nothing about H.H. Holmes. Duuuuude, I was going nuts trying to figure out how I recognized that picture but couldn't remember ever reading squat about him. Shit, it was making doubt what little sanity I have left.

I figure they used her because there really weren't any photos of Holmes's victims to use, although it smarts because some of us are true crime buffs who are smart enough to recognize her, damn it.

I could swear I know that first photo, too. It'll probably come to me.

I didn't recognise the photo but I did wonder where the hell they got photos of Holmes' victims!

Oh, and if you like true crime, pick up one of the books on Holmes. He's fascinating considering how much he got away with, and the murder castle is just freaking creepy. "The Devil and the White City" is a really good version of the events of his murders during the Chicago World Fair, and Harold Schechter's got a good book about his life story, too. There was another one I remember reading but I can't remember the title off the top of my head.

Robert Bloch did a thinly fictionalized version (name changed to protect the guilty) of the Holmes murders called American Gothic. It's pretty good.

I knew she looked familiar. My brother (Who is crazy-obsessed with Jack the Ripper) wasn't looking at the screen at the time or he would've no doubt started complaining about that.

On one hand, I'm annoying at the props department or set decorators or whoever put it there because anyone who knows true crime well enough to know the story of H. H. Holmes is going to recognize that photo, and it wasn't like there weren't more than one photo of a murder victim from the turn of the century they could have used.

On the other hand, not a lot of photographic evidence of any kind to use with Holmes, so there's not much to use in the way of props for the guy.

(Also, the actor who plays him doesn't look like H. H. Holmes. Less beard, more waxed mustache.)

I don't know if I'm amused or terrified by how many people in the fandom noticed that. I'm thinking they must have done it on purpose because there weren't real pictures of Holmes' victims available so they used a pretty well known victim as an inside joke or a wink at people who would recognize such things, maybe?

You have no idea how happy I am that I'm not the only one who recognized that picture.

Reminds me of yesterday at work when I was chatting about the upcoming ep with a friend of mine.

Me: And the bad guy in the episode tonight is the spirit of America's first Serial Killer!

Buddy: You mean, Jack The Ripper?

Me: ...Jack The Ripper's British. He killed poor women & prostitutes in the Whitechapel District of London.

Buddy ...*confused*

it says you and [livejournal.com profile] patsyrant were separated at birth. He can do the same. Hilarious fun on the Jack the Ripper walking tour a while back.

Random off-topic, but is that the one offered by London Walks, or a different one? I know there are many.

My ears perked up as soon as I saw "Mudgett", and I squealed like a fangirl. That's wrong...right?

THANK YOU! I told that to Mom, made her pause the TV, found a picture of Elizabeth Stride, and then rather sourly watched the rest of the episode. And if you're creepy? Right there with you. :D

Uhh... btw followed your amazing fics over!

*flails and giggles* I caught that, too. We're all so lame. :)

But I wasn't especially familiar with the villain, so I can take some comfort in that. Except that now I want to look him up, so I guess I'm choosing not to take comfort in it.

aaaand upon reading other comments it is nice to know we're all slightly disturbed in the fact that we know about serial killers.
