... but the fandom itself can be awesome.

In case you hadn't already heard, the people who were running the Firefly con being held this weekend cancelled at the last minute. And when I say the last minute, I mean the day before. A week or so ago when they'd admitted they were having difficulties, some fans offered to help only to have the people in charge respond that it was okay and they could handle it. Then -- BOO.

So even though it was last minute (and because a lot of already paid-for stuff was nonrefundable), people came anyway fully expecting it just to be a bunch of fans hanging out.

Then Adam Baldwin showed up, free of charge, just to hang.

Then he made some phone calls.

Then a whole bunch of the other actors showed up.

Oh, FANDOM. *cuddles everybody*

I can't even tell you how schmoozy this makes me feel. I want to cry, and I'm not even hormonal yet this month.

That. Is the best thing in fandom. Ever.

Eep!

Thanks for giving me an excuse to use my shirtless-Mal icon. ;)

I get all sentimentally attached to actors who do great stuff like this (i.e. Mark Harmon rescues children from burning car, and can now do no wrong in my eyes).

Adam Baldwin has my television viewing and movie dollars for life.

What? What? What? I knew I liked the man, but...

From a news article I found online:

Harmon rescued two teenagers from a burning car in 1996, using a sledgehammer to break the windows and pulling the boys to safety. The car erupted in flames after crashing through a fence and into a tree near Harmon's home in Brentwood. The former UCLA football star, who costarred in the big-screen "Freaky Friday," ran from his house to help -- and rescued the teens before authorities arrived. Harmon declined to comment on the incident, but neighbors and medical personnel agreed the boys owed Mark their lives.

I look at movies like Galaxy Quest and think, well, there's no way that casts stay that well-connected years later.

And then I read stuff like this and want to get sniffly. Big Damn Heroes? Oh yeah.

If you haven't heard this already, you'll probably like this story.

When Out of Gas was finished, the news of the cancelation had already come down the pike and Whedon said he was gong to find a way to get Serenity back in the air, no matter what. Tudyk stole the Big Red Button and sent it to Joss in the mail with the note that said,"When you get your miracle - just push. We'll be there."

Adam Baldwin is my favorite person right now. And apparently Nathan Fillion brought stuff to give out--I guess in lieu of con swag, but dude, stuff out of the back of Nathan Fillion's closet is so much better than swag.

I KNOW! I just have this mental image of him showing up with a box of old shirts and paperbacks and the porn he doesn't watch anymore and scarves and whatever and all I can think is, "OMG, as if I didn't already love him to bits."

My friend [livejournal.com profile] quaint_shopgirl got the box, heh.
I was there the whole time. I was there when Adam started walking into the lobby and we al lstarted singing Hero Of Canton and the Bedlam Bards started with accompanyment and augh. So great.

Nathan Fillion just rocks! He brought a bunch of his stuff from his closet and handed it out - he is truly awesome!
I'm so pleased this con was rescued by the fans and the actors - it sounds like it was a much more easygoing time than some of them that stay organised can be (you know the drill - hand over money for a photo, for an autograph, for generally breathing anywhere near the actors 'cos that's what their PR has dictated, ugh!).

Yep, he showed up on Saturday night when he found out through the Flanvention Helpline site that the thing was off (again.). He was supposed to show up there at the con as part ofthe BE Charitable thingy. I'm so pissed at myself cause I was on the bus back to the Hilton right as he showed up. D'oh. Ah well, can't complain. How many people can say they've hugged Niska, after all?

I didn't care for the show, but the actors...whoa. I've never seen that level of caring/dedication/kindness from actors before. Those people are something vv special.
