Rolling In Your Sleep

In the end, it's Izzie who pulls the strings, Izzie who gets a name and a phone number that she passes off to Denny with guilt in her eyes. Her fingertips tremble when she hands it to him, like she's barely reining it in. He pictures her practicing in front of a mirror, in front of Meredith and George, in front of whoever hasn't turned their back on her after what she did. It's a short list.
"It's only a cell phone number." She takes a moment to look at her hands, the sleeve of her shirt ... anything that's not the manila folder in his hands. "That's all I could get for him."
"You didn't have to do this," he says.
She forces a smile. "Yeah, well, I didn't have to do a lot of things," she says.
*****
It takes a dozen messages before Denny gets a response, a curt growl on his voicemail demanding to know what he wants.
"I was the one who got your son's heart," Denny says when he calls the man back.
It's a waste of breath to lie, to soften the blow.
*****
What Denny knows of his donor isn't much. He knows he was in a car with his brother when a semi plowed through it. He knows he was supposed to get the brother's heart first, but the man's internal injuries were too severe to keep the heart viable. He knows both brothers were a perfect match for him, and that it's all Izzie's fault he will carry the last part of one of them in his chest for the rest of his life.
He doesn't know that their father was in the car with them, not until he shows up at the restaurant they arranged to meet at and sees his own face staring back at him.
The other man's grip tightens on his cane as Denny sinks into the chair opposite him. "Okay, this is a little weird," Denny says after a long awkward silence.
John Winchester shrugs and downs the shot in front of him. "I've seen weirder."
*****
John shows him pictures of the boys, talking about them in the present tense like they're about to walk into the restaurant any minute now. Denny almost believes him, and the fourth time he catches himself glancing towards the door, he has to slide his palm down the front of his T-shirt to remember why he's here.
"I just wanted to thank you," he says.
"Consider yourself lucky," John says. "I don't even know how the hell we got to that hospital."
Denny doesn't get it but doesn't say anything. There are things you question and things you don't, and where you got a new heart isn't nearly as intriguing as why the father of the man you got it from looks exactly like you.
When the meal is over, John gets to his feet, the cane clumsy in his grasp as he stands next to the table. "If you have any problems, call me."
Denny leans back in his chair, shifts to get a better look at John's unreadable expression. "What kind of problems?"
"Trust me," John says, "you'll know them when you have them."
*****
Denny thinks everything is safe, that even with what it took to get this heart it'll all turn out okay in the end. After all, he's been a lucky son of a bitch lately.
When the agonizing dreams of Izzie sprawled on the ceiling and bathed in fire start up, he isn't sure what to think anymore.
But he has a strange feeling that John Winchester will know exactly to do.

Date: 2006-05-15 06:04 am (UTC)How fucked up is it that I'm glad both brothers died? The idea of just one of them enduring on alone is heartbreaking.

Yeah, he sure has. Much as I don't like to think of Dean and Sam d.e.a.d., this was really good!
