This is the "Heroes for Hire" cover that's been getting a lot of attention as viewed by someone who publishes pornographic comics. For anybody who hasn't seen it we've gone from MJ the objectified washerwoman to ... *drum roll* ... tentacle porn! Seriously, the only thing not on that cover is penetration, which is just faaaaabulous on the cover of a comic meant for twelve-year-olds. (That link's pretty obviously NSFW.)

I've also been thinking about the 'delightful' Adam Hughes interview regarding the whole wank and I think the thing that pinged with me hardest (aside from how impressed I was with how a man who wasn't in it all that deep to begin with promptly dug himself a hole so deep he struck oil) was a.) his mention of her being a model and actress in the past and b.) the line that said basically, "Well, she doesn't have superpowers, so anything we're going to do is just going to be her standing there." Hmm. I wonder if there's any way they could have combined the two concepts of "being a model" and "just standing there" ... *scratches head*

****

This is a NSFW cut scene from the upcoming movie Knocked Up, a film in which Katherine Heigl's character has a drunken one-night stand with a total schlub and gets pregnant. The trailer itself's pretty funny and I'm holding out hope that they took this out because it was the least funny thing in there, because if so I may sprain something or break a rib laughing at this movie.

Okay, so. I have absolutely no money, I'm laid off until tomorrow night at the least and next Monday at the most, my apartment needs cleaning, I'm lonely and hard-up, I've got my period and feel like crap, and I spend more time talking to my cat than I do to other human beings.

I'm going to go lie face down on my bed now and woe.

Which I know is not a verb and yet ... fits, don't you think?

I am using all my willpower to not read the Adam Hughes thing, because I don't have the time to be outraged today.

I was fine with him (though not completely happy) when I saw the concept art. Yeah, it was a dumb set-up and a far too complicated backstory, but the artwork itself was kind of cute.

And then he had to go and speak.

*growls*

I lost my will not to tear him to pieces after he described her as a "bimbo."

::nods:: Yeah, the concept art was cute and not nearly as offensive, so I was perfectly prepared to not hate him.

I've changed my mind.

I worked in a bookstore from 1988 until 1995 (pretty much my favorite job, but that's BTP). We used to sell thousands of titles of magazines -including porn- and later on, hundreds of titles of comic books. One very boring night, my assistant manager and I were flipping through comics and I came across a panel where a woman had her foot on a guy's crotch and was massaging it. *blinks* In an Incredible Hulk comic. If it had been in Heavy Metal, it wouldn't have surprised me. That was always marked "adult material, not for sale to minors". Soooo given the fact more than 12 years has gone by since that incident, I'm really not surprised to see the "Heroes for Hire" comic book cover.

::blink::

So if a woman doesn't have superpowers all she's good for is standing there with her tits hanging out and a vapid expression on her face?

It could've been a statue of her trying on the Spider-Man costume.

Which, kind of hot.

Hughes has actually drawn that a few times.

Way hot. Especially since he draws his women with, like. Muscle mass.

Omigod, that trailer looks hilarious!!!! I snorted watching it --- always a good sign. And the main character -- Ben -- and one of the other guys, are both from 'Freaks and Geeks' -- one of my fave tv shows ever.

BWAH! And y'know, this also ties into the post [livejournal.com profile] lyssie made the other day, about how non-super-powered "just the girlfriend" characters can have more going on, and maybe we should give them a little more credit for it.

You know they don't really NEED penetration with that cover. Any 12-year old nowadays is going to see it anyway. I swear!!

And that click from Knocked Up is fucking hilarious. I may have to go see the movie just to see Wolfie's face when that scene comes on.

Good thing I wasn't drinking my ice tea when I clicked over to the clip-I can't afford a new keyboard AND monitor right now.

Here-I'm passing around puppies, again. Sorry, I don't have any unicorns: the fishercats chased 'em all away. No rainbows, either. Just 90+degree, hazy weather-not even gonna try to get down to the beach, damn touristas.

Hope your weekend gets better-I'm off to work in the glamorous world of customer service-where people yell, swear, and threaten 'cause they're talking on the phone and don't have to look you in the eye while they're screaming in your ear. Oh, btw-we're hiring! How's your security clearance?

Not all comics are for kids. Heroes for Hire is rated Teen+, which means most mass market places (grocery stores, some bookstores) won't carry it. I haven't picked up my comics in a couple of months, but Heroes for Hire is on my list and I love it. It's not for kids, though; it's decidedly PG-13 at least.

Adam Hughes is one of my favorite artists, but everything I've ever read about him makes him sound like a complete tool. I met him at a con once and tried to tell him how much I liked his work and he was a prick.

That clip was absolutely hysterical & well-written, but I'm certain it's cut for the following reasons:

A) people who live in the places with "Belt" attached as nicknames would cause a stink.

B) the cynical producers know that they can make an "Uncensored" version of the DVD including stuff like this & nearly guarantee humongous DVD sales & rentals, so deleting genius scenes for theatre-run & then adding them back for sleazy DVD gimmickry allows the practically dead box office problem to absolve itself in rentals/sales (where most movies make back their budgets & actually profit these days)

I'd go along with that first one but since the movie's coming from the same guys who brought us The 40-Year-Old Virgin I'm sure there'll be plenty other scenes in the movie for them to have spastic fits over. ;)

I can't argue that second one, though, and wouldn't. If I'm remembering correctly I got the uncensored version of The 40-Year-Old Virgin myself, although I'm not exactly sure since my brother boosted it two weeks ago and hasn't given it back to me yet. *grumbles*

Not even done reading the interview yet, and what's pinging with me is the bit where he wants to be given a "get out of charges of misogyny free" card for anyone who didn't actually notice that what he was doing could offend someone. Because yeah, that's part of what we're kind of attacking here -- this shit is culturally accepted precisely because it's been going unexamined, and then when those of us who notice it point it out we get slapped with the claim that we're digging for reasons to be offended and hence a dismissal of the idea that there's anything genuinely to be considered in what we're saying.
