When I was little my grandmother used to watch all of the CBS soaps when she'd babysit me. And I've followed them on and off since then, so that for the most part if I flip past an episode of Guiding Light or Young and the Restless I can usually follow along pretty well. But I was never into As The World Turns, even though I still do know vaguely what's going on if I flip past it, just not as well as I know the others.
But now there are boys kissing on my soap operas and I just ... *flaily hands*
That's Luke and Noah and the terrifying thing is that I can totally remember when Luke was born on the show. (In 1995. Oh, soaps. Marry me and age our children twenty years in a week.) And they fell for one another, but then Noah's homophobic dicksmack of a father shot Luke, and now Noah feels all depressed and guilty because Luke can't walk, and Luke was all miserable and pissy in the hospital because Noah hadn't come to see him, but then Noah got talked into it and went to the hospital and was all stammery and apologetic and then they just held hands and smiled and THIS SHOW MAKES ME A WIBBLY MESS. I can't even stand that I'm watching a soap opera again but I am all for a show that will let its gay boys kiss. I'm sick of watching TV shows where they have a gay character but they never actually date anybody (see: Marc on Ugly Betty).
And it doesn't hurt that Luke and Noah are, in fact, complete and total puppies. The kind of puppies they show in pictures on Cute Overload, like a sleeping rolypoly Labrador and the snuggly cocker spaniel snuffling at his neck folds. Er ... what? They're so cute. There is a reason I want Luke/Noah smut for Yuletide, m'kay?
*****
I also watched Supernatural.
ANYWAY.
I know a lot of people had problems with Sam and Dean not interacting for most of the episode but I'm fine with it just as long as whatever they're doing separately is awesome. And it SO was. Dean had to have a daddy scare eventually and it's so Dean that it wasn't even a scare. Just ... just the smile on his face when Ben kneed that kid in the nuts, and when he knew damn well it wasn't Ben the second he saw the changling, and oh, my God, the way he cupped the kid's head when he got him out of that cage! *dies* I know he said that Lisa's life isn't something he'd ever have, and I totally agree with him, but that is a man in desparate need of some offspring. All he needed was the possibility that Ben might be his and he was RIGHT THERE.
And I'm not one of the people who thinks that Lisa is lying to Dean or that John was the mysterious barback in the biker joint, but I do think that meeting Dean's going to be a huge impact on Ben. No father figure and then one day this guy who's just like you shows up and saves your ass from monsters? That kid is SO a future hunter in the making. It isn't even funny. They're going to run into each other one day at a rest stop and be like, O.o. (And is it bad or awesome that I can picture Lisa sitting at home in the event that that happens, like, cleaning his guns for him and washing the blood stains out of his jeans? Because she rocked, and I think she's cool enough to get over the fear and stuff.)
And oh, how I like Blondie (did they even mention her name yet? Because I do read spoilers and I know what her name is but I'm not about to spoil anyone else). She's a demon! She knows about Mary's friends and family getting bumped off! She can help Dean! *flails* Obviously, the Mary Sue debate is open for business (yeah, like it wasn't last episode, right?) but I'm highly against making any reference to her as a Mary Sue right now. It's only been two episodes and she's done three things:
1.) Save Sam.
2.) Lead Sam on the path to finding out about his mom's friends.
3.) Tell Sam she can save Dean.
Which leads us to the question, would we even be bringing up the phrase Gary Stu at this juncture if she were a guy? If she'd shown up and taken down a bunch of demons at once but he had a dick, would that be okay? I'm sorry to be blunt, but I just wince at the Mary Sue thing when we've only seen her in one fight, she obviously has a weapon which can take down demons, and it turns out that she actually IS a demon. So she would be stronger than the average bear, and she would have reason to know what she knows. She won one fight? Call me in a couple of episodes when she wins all of the fights.
I think the fact that she is a demon is what keeps her from being a Mary Sue. Seriously, right now the only thing making her much different than Meg is whose side she's on.
But I like her. So, uh, yeah.
I also like growly yelling Sam, but I'll talk about that some time when I'm not running out the door on the way to work. :)

Don't you hate it when you can't get the sueage out of your throat?
So for me, the only really true definition of a mary sue is that they are badly written. So far, demon chica is not.

Date: 2007-10-12 10:04 pm (UTC)Not only that, save his ass with a mysterious demon-killing knife that somebody like Bobby has never heard of. Pretty much all the signs of a Mary Sue in my book.
And then? We find out she's a demon. And all of a sudden the extreme speshulness is simply good storytelling.
Plus, I'm still smiling at the way the reveal was handled. After all the gnashing and wailing about how this chick was going to "ruin the show", I really want to believe that Kripke et. al. pulled this on purpose.
Because damn. We got played, and it was BEAUTIFUL.

Date: 2007-10-12 11:17 pm (UTC)It's definitely difficult for me to think of a demon as a Mary Sue, particularly when you consider that she's so different for a demon. What other demon fights demons? Helps a human who is hated by other demons? Hmmmm ... I'm definitely intrigued for wherever it is they're taking this character. And she's certainly smart. Knew exactly which of Sam's buttons to push in their first scene together, knew exactly what she was doing in that final scene. That last card she pulled was definitely the one she was holding on to until the last second: DEAN. She knows where Sam's loyalties lie. ;)
Mmmmm, growly yelling Sam. *swoons*

But I will have to check out this gay love affair! I already found torrents for it. Hurray :D
