I've spent the last fifteen minutes since I've come home and been straightening up my office desk watching the National Zoo's naked mole rat cam. They're so ugly-cute! And they're s'eepin' in a big pile! And they can't get comfy so they keep wigglin' around and bein' adorable.
Okay, back to writing.

Date: 2008-02-12 02:04 am (UTC)Naked mole rats are actually poikilothermic (or ectothermic), as well as fairly impervious to pain, and eusocial (hive-like, as with insects like bees and ants), so that huddling you're seeing? That's them keeping warm. They wiggle out from the bottom of the pile when they get too warm, so you'll see constant turnover in the pile. They have a nesting chamber, a trash/bathroom chamber, etc. They're really pretty cool.
At DAK, we have (off exhibit) Zambian Giant Mole Rats (think sweet potatoes with huge teeth and nonexistent eyes) that are so much fun to watch. The nakeds are probably the coolest, though. Weird bunch of motherfuckers. :D
