So much WRONG.
Aug. 7th, 2008 11:20 amI already thought PETA was full of fail for being sexist pigs in order to "protect animals." But now they've tried to run an ad comparing the bus decapitation murder to the slaughter of animals for food processing.
Oh, and Westboro's also going to protest the funeral.
FAIL TIMES TWO.
Oh, my God, I'm so SICK of people being such unimaginable bastards.

Date: 2008-08-07 03:32 pm (UTC)OH. MY. GOD.
For pete's sake, PETA, I have tried and tried to give you the benefit of the doubt. Slaughtering processes *are* inhumane, yes. Shock tactics sometimes work, I told myself. I was a vegetarian for seven years. I am generally on your side. So would you quit making that 'side' look like insensitive assholes? Thanks.
And speaking of insensitive assholes, I am just waiting for the day when some family at a funeral gives the Phelps Dumbass Brigade a good curb-stomping. I know that's what they want because then they'll whine and cry about persecution and sue, but it would still amuse me.

Date: 2008-08-07 03:37 pm (UTC)"“I don’t use the word 'pet.' I think it’s speciesist language. I prefer 'companion animal.' For one thing, we would no longer allow breeding. People could not create different breeds. There would be no pet shops. If people had companion animals in their homes, those animals would have to be refugees from the animal shelters and the streets. You would have a protective relationship with them just as you would with an orphaned child. But as the surplus of cats and dogs (artificially engineered by centuries of forced breeding) declined, eventually companion animals would be phased out, and we would return to a more symbiotic relationship – enjoyment at a distance.” - Ingrid Newkirk
This is not someone who loves animals.

Date: 2008-08-07 04:30 pm (UTC)Thanks to PETA, it's going to cost me $300 a year to license* my dogs. I don't breed, but I show them. They are NEVER at large, they are not ANY nuisance and just.. yeah. UGH.
*(IF the permit is even available- can't legally own an intact animal anymore iwthout a permit, but they haven't made the forms or the process for getting that permit yet.) Previously it was $60 a year for all three.

Date: 2008-08-07 09:31 pm (UTC)They killed 97% of the fewer than 5000 animals they took in last year as 'unadoptable'. Those animals were NOT (in the vast majority) taken in from the public. They were released from shelters who believed that PETA's 'shelter' was akin to a sanctuary or rescue group and WOULD find them homes.
They applauded the firebombing of the homes of two researchers (who yes, use animals in testing- it's just not totally possible to eliminate animals in drug research yet, and think how much YOU would hate to have a drug that'd never been tested on a living animal prescribed for yourself or a loved one, human or animal.) in California two weeks ago.
Most people I know who support PETA are all talk and no action. Supporting PETA is an easy way to be 'for' animals- it's easier than doing transports or fostering or writing letters or meeting with your local city and state officials to try and get more funding for existing animal control agencies (in general, most of the US *HAS* decent anti-cruelty and neglect laws- it's the enforcement tha'ts problematic, and making more laws won't change that.)
