I already thought PETA was full of fail for being sexist pigs in order to "protect animals." But now they've tried to run an ad comparing the bus decapitation murder to the slaughter of animals for food processing.

Oh, and Westboro's also going to protest the funeral.

FAIL TIMES TWO.

Oh, my God, I'm so SICK of people being such unimaginable bastards.

Oh my god.

OH. MY. GOD.

For pete's sake, PETA, I have tried and tried to give you the benefit of the doubt. Slaughtering processes *are* inhumane, yes. Shock tactics sometimes work, I told myself. I was a vegetarian for seven years. I am generally on your side. So would you quit making that 'side' look like insensitive assholes? Thanks.

And speaking of insensitive assholes, I am just waiting for the day when some family at a funeral gives the Phelps Dumbass Brigade a good curb-stomping. I know that's what they want because then they'll whine and cry about persecution and sue, but it would still amuse me.

Please don't give them the benefit of the doubt.

"“I don’t use the word 'pet.' I think it’s speciesist language. I prefer 'companion animal.' For one thing, we would no longer allow breeding. People could not create different breeds. There would be no pet shops. If people had companion animals in their homes, those animals would have to be refugees from the animal shelters and the streets. You would have a protective relationship with them just as you would with an orphaned child. But as the surplus of cats and dogs (artificially engineered by centuries of forced breeding) declined, eventually companion animals would be phased out, and we would return to a more symbiotic relationship – enjoyment at a distance.” - Ingrid Newkirk

This is not someone who loves animals.

Yeah, I don't anymore-- for a while I just knew that they were a well-known animal rights organization and the butt of a lot of jokes. I thought if they were working for animal rights their hearts had to be in the right place, and if they used shock tactics it was just because they knew that said tactics would get them press and help their cause. Then I found out what some of their tactics were. :-P

That's kind of where I'm at. I didn't know they had said things to piss off so many people.

It's not just what they've SAID.

Thanks to PETA, it's going to cost me $300 a year to license* my dogs. I don't breed, but I show them. They are NEVER at large, they are not ANY nuisance and just.. yeah. UGH.

*(IF the permit is even available- can't legally own an intact animal anymore iwthout a permit, but they haven't made the forms or the process for getting that permit yet.) Previously it was $60 a year for all three.

Try googling the truth about PETA. It only gets worse the more you dig. I'm afraid most so-called Animal Rights groups have fallen so far off the mark they couldn't find it with the Hubble telescope.

This is how they're making their money. You figure thye're just an extreme group with the shock value - then you do more reading.

They killed 97% of the fewer than 5000 animals they took in last year as 'unadoptable'. Those animals were NOT (in the vast majority) taken in from the public. They were released from shelters who believed that PETA's 'shelter' was akin to a sanctuary or rescue group and WOULD find them homes.

They applauded the firebombing of the homes of two researchers (who yes, use animals in testing- it's just not totally possible to eliminate animals in drug research yet, and think how much YOU would hate to have a drug that'd never been tested on a living animal prescribed for yourself or a loved one, human or animal.) in California two weeks ago.

Most people I know who support PETA are all talk and no action. Supporting PETA is an easy way to be 'for' animals- it's easier than doing transports or fostering or writing letters or meeting with your local city and state officials to try and get more funding for existing animal control agencies (in general, most of the US *HAS* decent anti-cruelty and neglect laws- it's the enforcement tha'ts problematic, and making more laws won't change that.)

Oh, to call out PETA? Have all of the fun you want. I hate them for everything you've said and for their continually sexist if not completely misogynistic advertising and publicity stunts. I rarely if ever see them do anything that doesn't make me want to hide my pets to keep them the hell away from people that idiotic.

Double yes on the sexist stunts. The ad I saw that woke me up to PETA's tactics was one protesting cruelty in circuses-- but to do that, they had a bruised-looking woman in chains. It looked more like a bad porno pose than anything else. I was so pissed that they'd try to get attention through some scary, "Hey, isn't violence against women sexy?" ad. Ugh. I still get pissed just thinking about that one.

Heh. :P Be careful what you wish for. PA's law that just got signed had, at one point, an exotic animal provision that would have outlawed your chinchillas. (It didn't make it as far as it did, but the law's a wreck.)

Well, the "reason" they're putting forward is that Canada allows gay marriage, abortions and, apparently, adultery.

They were already going to be in two different cities protesting and then this happened which they called either a sign or a gift from God.

Assholes.

PETA lost any respect I might have had for them when they wrote to Tim McVeigh and asked him to set an example by having a vegan last meal. "Hi, Tim, we know you're an asshole deluxe and a baby-killer, but could you be a good guy and spare an animal and make us look good by turning you away from The Dark Side?"

And Westboro has threatened to picket several funerals and not show up as of late. I think they might be having financial woes. *high-fives Jesus*

I could swear I read somewhere -- I think on Pandagon -- that there'd been a fire on their church property and there was speculation it'd been set for the insurance money. Which, really, wouldn't surprise me at all.

Number six on this list. (And my bad, it says "meatless", not vegan. Wonder if he gave PETA a nod with the two pints of mint chocolate chip ice cream he had.)

My fiance is a vegetarian, and he even thinks they're gorilla-shit crazy.
