Oh, it's Hero by Perry Moore. It was a really fabulous book. Can't recommend it enough. :)

*shrugs* I ran up there for cat food and litter and mentioned I was going to make Velveeta mac and cheese (not from the mix, from the block of fake cheese), and he got these great big puppy eyes because that's one of his favorites, and I totally cracked. :)
