I shouldn't be scared of McCain/Palin supporters.

I shouldn't. And for the few on my friends list, I'm not. But this behavior is appalling and terrifying. God knows it's a distinct possibility with a black candidate that his life might be put in danger by some psycho. We shouldn't be concerned that the other candidates might be the one to steer them there.

(And I'm particularly tired of the Ayers bullshit. So far, I haven't seen anything that makes him more than a mere acquaintance to Obama, and even if they call each other every night and coo sweet nothings into the phone, if we're going to sit here and make snide insinuations about everyone the candidates have met, I'm sure we can make up some great conspiracy theories about people McCain's met.)

In less aggravating news, my boss said, "Overtime?" and I said, "Yes, please!" 'Cause, I'm a jackass, see. *sigh*

Still haven't caught up with Heroes, Dexter, and The Amazing Race. Also missed Chuck. Urgh.

It really and truly disgusts me that (1) Palin is using these scare tactics to rally crowds and (2) there are so many people willing to blindly believe the bull they are being fed.

I have no faith in humanity these days. I cannot wait until November 4th.

Even with all of the polls saying that the election leans more Obama's way with every passing day, I'm still terrified that McCain and Palin are going to take it on November 4th -- not because they'll have been elected by conservatives with level heads, but because the lowest common denominator they appear to be appealing to will come out of the woodwork and vote like crazy for them.

Hell, all you need are Palin's ties with an Alaska secessionist group started by a guy who cursed America and ended up getting killed during a deal to buy plastic explosive. Never mind Rev. Thomas Muthee, who got his start by condemning a woman in Africa as a witch and almost getting her killed -- he's Palin's pastor, and is on tape blessing her and asking God to make her Governor...which she credits for her actually gaining the position.

McCain in 1998 dismissed the push to brand Osama as a major terrorist. Hmmm, what was he covering for there?

I feel ill. So terribly, horribly ill. It's like the greatest hits of the early 20th Century come back!

You loved The Great Depression... and now our Stock Market is plummeting again because of credit issues!

If you were just waiting for another political leader to gain the support of screaming crowds by turning their fear and despair into illogical hatred, we have JUST the ticket for you!

Ugh Ugh Ugh.

History. Repeats. When people don't LEARN. Garg.

Here's a more human depiction of the McCain/Palin rallies (before it got more disgusting.)

More seems to be the key word here.

Jesus Christ. You know, I love this country, hell, I'm not American, I chose to live here. But these people scare the shit out of me.

As I told my kids (on hearing that "kill him" last night), I don't hold the candidates responsible directly for what the audience says, and I support the right of the person in the audience to hold an opinion other than mine, but I absolutely hold the McCain campaign responsible for not stopping whatever they were doing, looking at that guy, and saying, "in an environment such as we still have in this country, that right there is the kind of statement that in fact incites violence. Incites violence against our own citizens, which one could argue is a kind of treason. It's not funny. It's not funny here, and it's not funny anywhere else, and if you think it's appropriate to holler that in a public space like this, I think I'd rather you left. I don't want anyone to harm my opponent." And if they didn't hear it in the moment, they surely have seen the clips, and they should be saying something.

Because the thing is, I have not a shred of doubt that if Obama were holding a rally and someone said something equivalent about McCain, he would do that. Do you? Seriously. He would stop and say, no, this isn't the kind of thing my candidacy, my campaign, is about. I think the other guy is wrong about a lot of things, but I have no interest in harming him, and I don't want you to, either. If you support me, you won't go there.

This.

You aren't accountable for what people say, but you are accountable for informing people what you personally do not support and do not want to hear from people who claim to be on the same page as you. "That is not my page; in fact, I don't think we're in the same book."

How hard would it have been for McCain, or anyone, to hear that statement and respond "That is extremely inappropriate"? Hell, I'd respect him more if he had, as I suspect would have a lot of people. Not enough to vote for him, though, so perhaps he didn't consider it worth it to alienate one of his supporters...

Oh god, that's just... argh.

If you're interested in all the stuff about McCain's dodgy friends, Making Light did a really good post about that the other day. It's here: http://nielsenhayden.com/makinglight/archives/010647.html#010647
