As for that second one, I just finished reading Seabiscuit today and loved every page of it. Couldn't recommend it enough, and the same goes for the movie. (And just so you know, my horse racing knowledge and interest before reading the book and seeing the movie was, "Fire bad, horse pretty." So if it's not your thing, just give it a chance, damn it.)

Also, picked up ink for my printer today, so that I might actually print out some of the story prep I've already got done. And just for added measure, I've got chapter after chapter of the novel [livejournal.com profile] qnotku and her partner-in-crime finally handed over to their agent popping up in my email. I've decided to take it as a taunt. It isn't, but my inner writer promptly has a tantrum and spits out some fucked-up story idea when I do.

Oh, and today's brilliant idea from Captain Asshat: He bought Aqua Teen Hunger Force on DVD (hey, he can't be tasteless all the time) and was so eager to watch it at work that he plans to go home tonight and find out how to get the work computers to play DVDs. Uh, there's a reason they can't, dumbass.

Dude! Mr. Holland's opus just came on the Live365 film score channel I love! *squees* Ooo, and now Rain Man music! *happy dances*

Have you read The Brothers K? Not karamazov...by David James Duncan. It's about kids and war and baseball and crushed dreams and brotherhood and individuality and...a bunch of stuff. Looong and completely excellent and alternately can't read it aloud funny and wrenching.

This came to mind because for some reason Seabiscuit (the book) reminded me of it a bit. Although the connection is highly unclear.

1. A movie:

Return of the King. It rocks like a rocking thing.

2. A book:

I'll give you a number of them.

A Game of Thrones by George R. R. Martin
A Clash of Kings by George R. R. Martin
A Storm of Swords by George R. R. Martin
Smoke and Mirrors by Neil Gaiman
American Gods by Neil Gaiman
The Golden Key by Melanie Rawn, Jennifer Roberson and Kate Elliott
Hogfather by Terry Pratchett
Feet of Clay by Terry Pratchett
Lords and Ladies by Terry Pratchett
Interesting Times by Terry Pratchett
When Christ and His Saints Slept by Sharon Kay Penman

3. A musical artist, song, or album:

What, with all the books I gave you to read, you have time to listen to music? Okay, I'll give you a couple of oldies. I mean, real oldies:

Yesterday I Heard The Rain and Who Can I Turn To? sung by Tony Bennett. Sad. Sweet. Melancholy without delving into pure angst.

Twilight Time by the Platters. One of the best romantic ballads EVER. It was an oldie even when I was a kid, but it's gorgeous.

Hooked on Classics 1 & 2. If you ever thought that classical music was dull, boring and slow, listen to these wild, passionate classics that were written to be played at an allegro tempo. (Bonus points if you recognize the numerous commercials, popular songs and movie themes that used these tunes as bases.)

Recommending to You:
1. A movie.

Wings of Desire
http://www.suntimes.com/ebert/greatmovies/wingsdesire.html

It rocks, it is beautiful and aching and in German. (And ends better.)

2. A book.

Angel Fire by Ron Franscell
http://www.ncteamericancollection.org/litmap/franscell_ron_wy.htm

Not just because he is from my home state and I met him when he did a promotion of this book at the newsstand that I was assistant manager of, read this book because it is some of the most beautiful prose I have ever read.

And then anything by Terry Pratchett or Roger Zelazny.

( I will add that "Wide Sargasso Sea" was excellent as both book and movie. Read and then watch, sensual and gorgeous. )
