Those are three entirely separate incidents.

WHAT the FUCK is WITH this year so far?! Hell, what is with this week, for Christ's sake?

I need more Smirnoff. Jesus.

(Also to note, the analysis listed right underneath.)

I suspect it has something to do with the impending apocalypse, or possibly southern hick militias who want to destroy everything because we have a semi-black president. WE MAY NEVER KNOW.

Actually, I take offense to that. I'm from the south and the last time I checked NY nor Washington were in the south.

This particular type of statement is exactly the thing bigotry is based on. You don't have to be black, white, yellow, brown or polka dot to have some form of bigotry aimed at you.

The world today is going through an upheavel and unfortunately people do not handle it well.

I'm very sad that the world has decided to rip itself apart in the last week it seems. The senseless killing is beyond me. I don't care what race, culture or gender you are no one deserves to have this happen to them.

I just have never liked stereotypes, and I felt like I needed to say something. I wasn't and am not trying to start anything :)

Yeah, I'm not trying to start anything either :) It just rankles to have Southerners maligned at every opportunity and I had to agree.
Is every Southerner a stereotype? No. Is the rest of the country magically perfect? No. Heh.

It was just a joke, but a joke with a point. Most of the militant douchebag groups I've heard of are south of the Mason-Dixie line. I didn't mean offense, but as I already said: joke. Clearly a joke. Getting distressed about something a stranger says on the internet is fairly baffling, all things considered, and if you do choose to go that route, there are plenty of bigger assholes online that aren't kidding.

Actually, most of them are west of the Mississippi. You don't know much, do you?

Date: 2009-04-05 03:09 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] anne-jumps.livejournal.com
Yeah, most of the ones I hear about are in the West.

Idaho, Montana, Utah ... that's where a lot of them end up because there's fewer people around to bother them and they're more accepting of cults and fringe societies and the like over there. (I watch way too many National Geographic docs and A&E crime shows, seriously.)

... Texas. *sigh* Yes, we still have a few of the "Republic of..." nutjobs running around. Last I heard Chuck Norris wants to be their president.

Oh, yeah, a couple of articles about that popped up on [livejournal.com profile] ontd_political a while back. I think the general consensus was, "Uh, treason, Chuck? Have you perhaps heard of it?"

Texas, mind you, due to its location (and the amount of the continental US we actually take up) counts for both "south of the Mason-Dixon line" and "west of the Mississippi."

I'm not distressed, I was just pointing out it wasn't a very fair assumption.

Like I said I'm not trying to start anything, everyone will tell you I steer clear as much as possible.

That just happened to bother me with all the deaths involved especially over the last week.

Well, the one in Pittsburgh was apparently saying something at somepoint about Obama taking away "our guns". (No, sir, the police will be doing that now.)

From: [identity profile] apocalypsos.livejournal.com
Seriously, right? If you don't want Obama to consider a gun ban (although he's not, for fuck's sake), maybe you shouldn't kill three cops with yours.

Oh my god I am right there with you in the land of freakout.

Rationally, I'm trying to convince myself this does not substantively change anything, as they already had the capability and many other nations do as well, etc.

I still am unhappy.

Would you like tea? Or rum? Or something to soothe the nerves?

I'm still trying to decide whether I'm relieved that the Binghamton massacre was done by an immigrant who'd supposedly gone to that center before rather than a nativist. Most likely it's just royally fucking sad and disturbing either way.

You have culture that's based on vicious competition and everyone for themselves, that nearly idolzes handguns and you have a social safety net worth a fart in a jacuzzi. On top of that, your economy is tanking. People getting desperate and seeing violence as the only way out is about as surprising as the sun rising in the morning.

I kinda had that same sinking feeling with the fires in February. It felt like the end of the world. I can imagine it feels a lot like that with random people shooting passers by.

I remember how excited everyone that 08 was over at last. It was a crap year but it has nothing on 09.

Between Easter and Christmas I wonder which one is going to win for the bloodiest holiday of the year.

As for the comment about the Southerners...get a clue please, not all of us are Klan members nor members of the Nazi party or any neo-confederate group.

there's an article on metafilter right now about how if this is some sort of cultural meme/change, then 5% of the World will die in the next couple of years or something. It's weird and obv just an idea, but it really puts into perspective the recent escalation o_o
