Supernatural ...

-- I really like that they're getting their season's quota of silly episodes out of the way early. The way this season will quite obviously go, silly episodes later in the season will probably jar a bit more than usual with the tone of ... you know, the apocalypse.
-- I still need Castiel/Gabriel smut. Mmm-hmm.
There's nothing thinky about that statement other than that I can't stop thinking about it. Heh.
-- I find it interesting that at the beginning of the episode Sam is all, "Let's try to talk to the Trickster!" and ... well, it doesn't work. But by the end of the episode, it's possible that it's sunk into the Trickster/Gabriel that maybe he can choose a side, instead of sitting on the sidelines all, "I'M SICK OF YOUR SHIT YOU GUYS, GOD."
-- I'm not the least bit surprised Dean doesn't like cop shows. It's like doctors who don't like watching medical shows because they wince at all the mistakes, or how my dad can't watch Extreme Makeover Home Edition because he can see all the corners they cut. Except Dean's not a cop, he's a criminal, AND he can fake being a cop, so mostly he's sitting there going, "Oh, my God, how STUPID are you people?" I bet Sam hates legal shows for the same reason. Must be hilarious trying to get the both of them to watch Law and Order.
-- I was very happy with the Gabriel reveal. Yay, Gabriel!
Okay, at first I thought it was Zachariah faking being the Trickster because of his "Play your roles out there" schtick. And Kripke may have thought of it yesterday, for all I care, but it actually explains a lot for me, at least. Why he's so interested in Sam and Dean, why he couldn't be killed like a real Trickster, his speech to Sam at the end of Mystery Spot, and why he let Dean live at the end of that episode. I've already seen a few references to why he would kill Dean over and over again if he knew about the Michael's sword, but I'm actually in the opposite camp.
What does a Trickster have invested in bringing Dean back at all at the end of the episode? Dean's repeated deaths aren't permanent. He even comes back from the last one. He never planned on not bringing Dean back, but he was hoping Sam, the big dim lummox, would learn a damn lesson after losing Dean over and over again -- that the bad guys will use his love for Dean against him, that he can go really, really dark if things go bad. We knew all of that even before the Gabriel reveal, and it pretty much foretold everything up until now.
The Trickster doesn't need to bring Dean back at the end of that episode, even though he quite obviously can. Gabriel, however, is making a decision at that point, one which reflects the one he made with his own brothers. Basically, "Fuck y'all, I'm taking my ball and I'm going home."
Tear yourselves apart, for all I care.
At the point in "Mystery Spot" when the Trickster is killing Dean over and over again, he's invested on making a point to Sam -- Sam, who at that point might not be the lost cause Dean already is. Dean will go to Hell, and he will break eventually, and the angels won't pull him out until he breaks and plays his part in the apocalypse. But Sam still has choices to make, and it doesn't sink in the way Gabriel hopes. At that point ... you know what, fuck you guys, you go play your parts in the apocalypse and bicker and fight and see if I give a shit.
Cut to today. The Trickster is annoyed. Sam and Dean, who clearly didn't learn the lessons of "Mystery Spot", are taking too long to fulfill their roles. So Gabriel does what he feels he has to. He rips the Band-aid off. And it still doesn't work.
But I think this time Gabriel may be the one to come out of the episode having learned a lesson. We'll see. (God, I hope we see. I really, really, REALLY like Richard Speight, Jr. in the role.)
-- Ooo, ooo! Another thing about Gabriel. I really like the difference between him and Castiel, in what we've seen of future!Cas. I wouldn't say Gabriel had a good breakup with the angels, but he's definitely not had to deal with the same shit Castiel had. So what you have is a guy who either never felt bitter and depressed about breaking away from his family, has long since gotten over it, or is very good about hiding how bitter he is about the whole thing. (Considering his reactions in this episode, I'd say the last one, but with the obvious change that interacting with Sam and Dean and getting nowhere has brought those hurt feelings to the surface.)
In any event, they both end up coping with indulgences - Gabriel with candy, Castiel with drugs, and both of them with women. It's just that it seems like Castiel is indulging to cover the dull ache of being separated by his family, while Gabriel's indulging more for indulgence's sake.
-- I adored all the ribbing at Grey's Anatomy, although it genuinely did remind me why I stopped watching. I do love the fact that they're anvilling the hell out of a JDM return. Yes, warn me ahead of time. If he suddenly shows up on my TV screen without warning, I will miss the next five minutes of dialogue from squeeing.

Loved all the poking at Grey's while my roommate just sat in the corner and sulked.
JDM appearance??? This I may just stop breathing and miss the rest of the show!! :D
I adored this whole ep with the Trickster/Gabriel, and the whole TV land concept... Especially with the herpes commercial, and then Sam's "You think I should honk?"
Just perfect!
