This is supposed to be Teri Hatcher in a fat suit for an upcoming episode of Desperate Housewives.

That's, what, maybe a size 8, if that?

Oh, for fuck's sake, Hollywood. *headsmack*

Yeah, it's the fat added onto the face that made her seem chubby to me momentarily - her torso is perfectly average.

My personal favorite is when she struggles to crouch down next to Mike in her oh-so-excessive maybe-140-pound body.

Hee.

And really, the more I look at it, the more ridiculous the facial padding becomes. I never looked like that even when I was on corticosteroids, which cause weight gain and an enchanting side effect called "facial mooning".

I wouldn't have known it if it wasn't pointed out - i think she just looks 10 years younger!

Somebody else said that on Jezebel and I totally agree with it. They did put a little too much padding on her face, but even with that it fleshes her out (no pun intended) and gives her a healthier glow. There are people who can pull off looking good at the same level of skinny that she's at, but her bone structure combined with weighing maybe a hundred and five pounds or whatever does nothing for her.

also - she now actually has an arse!

huh. Besides the weird face padding. She actually looks like a healthy and attractive person to me now. I am now also glad that I stopped watching this show after season 1 because suddenly making one character 'oh so fat' by Hollywood standards and ridiculing that character for it is a huge squick for me. I barely got through the episodes of BSG where they did it to Lee.

Yeah, from the neck-up maybe I could buy that she's "fat" but besides that I'm struggling to figure out where the fat suit is. (And once you get past rail thin, you totally lose your ability to sit with good posture and struggle to do simple tasks like kneel on the floor, dontchaknow.)

It's a flesh coloured legs and stomach thing. They've padded her boobs too but her arms are just held out at a ridiculous angle.

If I didn't know it was a fat suit story line I'd say she'd had mumps or a bee sting allergy.

... to be honest, I perceive that "fat suit" look to actually be rather chubby, if not bordering on 'big.' Is that really like, an average American size? *Is an Aussie from a not-so-big coastal town.* Probably just my perception in relation to the majority of people I know, so no offence intended. :)

I thought the same. Looks 'chubby' to me, but as you said, it's a matter of perception.

And the way she moved looked really weird. Either they play it for a joke (which would suck) or Terri simply has problems moving in that suit which wouldn't surprise me.

the average american woman is a size 14, which is actually a bit larger than the character shown here. we're a nation of fat people *shrug*- it's a health issue, but someone being as overweight as the character in this show is not going to die from it. but yes, that is an average american size, if not a bit smaller than the "average american woman".

I'm more sorta irked that it's played for humor. I'm going to say she's size 10.But I don't get it, she's still smaller than the average real life housewife.

I could see if she was COMICALLY Obese because it'd be an AMAZINGLY HUGE contrast ala Monica in Friends, and only funny in a meta way. This really isn't that fat and No I'm not some banner waving size 14.. Full disclosure: I used to be around that size and didn't have problems moving like she's playing at. It's like they plumped her to 10 and she's acting like she's 16 or larger

So true! She's SO not HUMOROUSLY fat. It's wrong to make fun of her at this size, she must be bigger before it's acceptable to make fun of her.

Oh look, my sarcasm got out again.

" and only funny in a meta way."

Meta: Something where the audience is clued in. A self referential joke, jab or commentary.
Teri "size negative numbers" Hatcher in a fat suit fits as meta because she's extremely skinny and everyone knows it.

I pet your sarcasm and give her a bone. She's a good puppy, just excitable. I did not intend to say Fat is Funny.

Yeah, playing off somebody who in a "fat suit" isn't remotely overweight as a humorous situation is the problem.

I guess using the term 'fat suit' to denote the method used to add weight onto a person isn't exactly ideal. I don't watch the show, so I don't know the context, but if this is meant to be weight that Hathcher's character has put on (and will no doubt subsequently lose in an episode - if even that long a period of time), it would be highly unlikely for her to suddenly become morbidly obese. The point, I guess, is that for someone of Hatcher's usual build, this is OMGFAT.

That said, however, those cheeks are hilarious.

It isn't, though, not really. Even by American standards she's still thin.

I can see what you're saying, actually. My comfort weight is between 110 and 115 lbs (I'm 5 feet tall). A few years ago I weighed 140. That's only about 15 lbs above the healthy range according to bmi charts, but it's 25-30 lbs above my comfort weight. According to the chart I was only 15 lbs overweight, but my body felt like it was 30 lbs overweight. I was lethargic. I got overheated really easily. Just being outside in 85° F weather gave me vertigo. I got terrible stretch marks on my inner thighs. I wasn't even eating particularly unhealthy food—I was just eating way too much.

I'm not exactly sure what you ([livejournal.com profile] apocalypsos) mean by American Standards. By American medical standards, 60% of Americans are overweight. A person can be thinner than 55% of the population and still be medically overweight.

Note: I am not condoning what the show did. Her body looks like it's probably in the upper limits of a healthy weight range. Her head looks pasted on. No doctor worth his/her salt would consider that body to be fat, let alone excessively so. Not only is Hatcher's character being laughed at, but the show is portraying her as something repulsive, and I find that deeply offensive.

Way too much padding on the face. The rest of her looks good.
