The only good thing I can say ...

... about the person on my Facebook news feed who said about the Haitians, "Fuck them! Where were they during Hurricane Katrina? They can fend for themselves just like we did!" is that the unapologetic fuckjuggling thundercock isn't actually one of my friends, but somebody responding to one of my former classmates' call for charity.

Never mind that:

-- Haiti is one of the poorest if not THE poorest country in the Western Hemisphere.
-- We're the richest.
-- In 2005 they were smack between a rebellion/coup and a contentious election.
-- We only "fended for ourselves" if you completely disregard the $40 million in international aid we spent on victims and reconstruction.
-- And even if we did "fend for ourselves," look how fucking well THAT turned out.

Holy FUCK, sometimes I just lose faith in humanity. I don't know how many died during Katrina (all I know is too many, no matter the actual number), but I read yesterday that the count in Haiti (of Haitians alone, not counting the Americans, Canadians, and others there) is 100,000. Their infrastructure has been decimated. One third of the population is now homeless. And all this considering how little most Haitians had to begin with! Canada, where I live, is home to the largest Haitian diaspora in the world- it's been most of the newspaper everyday now.

Someday, we will invent technology that allows us to slap people through the internet, and it will be glorious. Or the internet will become self-aware enough to slap people itself, which will be both glorious and kind of scary.

But you should tell that moron that despite being the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere (where something like HALF the population has to live on $1 a day), Haiti donated $36,000 to the US in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, because they wanted to show their sympathy and solidarity.

Also, we fended for ourselves freaking terribly! Despite having a stable government, infrastructure, a disaster relief system and a level of wealth that massively exceeds Haiti's. WTF are they supposed to do?
