OMG YOU GUYS WTF IS WRONG WITH SPLICE.

NO, TRUST ME, YOU WANT TO BE SPOILED. NO, I CAN'T TAKE THE CAPS LOCK OFF. DUDE, WHAT THE SAUCY UNDILUTED HELL?!

EDIT: Oh, and that link is triggery like WHOA.

What do you think causes the reaction?

The events themselves, or the lack of warning? I checked it out before seeing it, and am glad I did, given what I read.

While I won't judge the film on it's merits, I do think it is triggering, and does not warn specifically about what happens.

I am used to Vin's movies, as I've seen them and enjoyed them all, but sitting in the theatre even I was deeply uncomfortable in a number of scenes for Splice.

The studios are not marketing it as honestly as they could (probably because they'd lose their money if they marketed it for what it actually is). It took ten years for this movie to finally get funded and made, so Vin's not going to jump up and go "no, no, you're doing it wrong because this is actually about ___."

However, the marketing department or someone needs to make mention of his formerly directed/written movies because it is in that vein and I feel deeply sorry for anyone that goes blindly into this movie having no clue who Vin is (or Guillermo del Toro, because he's one of the producers).

Splice is not for everyone. It's not for a majority of the usual movie-going audience. But if you're a fan of Vin's works and you're aware that this goes further than anything he's ever done, then maybe you can handle it. Still, it's going to be hard.

IT'S A MOTHERFUCKING HORROR MOVIE.

Agreed, but

there is horror, and there is horror.

There is Bram Stoker's Dracula or Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, and then there is Saw or Last House on the Left.

There is a difference, in my opinion, between "conceptional" horror, and the acts which take place within this movie. I don't judge it, as I am not the target audience. As such, I claim the right to not wish to see it.

Which is fine--I don't like horror movies, either--but claiming that it should warn you in advance when that defeats the entire purpose of the genre is ridiculous.

The bioethics was fine

The sex issues are what squicked me.

I'm pretty sure that was the intent.

The thing is, horror movies (and movies in general) DO warn you in advance -- in the MPAA warnings. Here's Splice's:

Rated R for disturbing elements including strong sexuality, nudity, sci-fi violence and language.

The MPAA also has warnings for rape and sexual violence, but neither were added to that listing. "Strong sexuality" is not the same thing to describe what's going on in the movie.

Maybe someone thought that's what sci-fi violence meant.

Right, but other disturbing horror films like "Cannibal Holocaust" or "Buio Omega" or about a million bajillion others I can think of weren't marketed as mainstream horror. This one has been, and that's the problem. It's not a matter of familiarity with Vincenzo's work or familiarity with the horror genre, it's all about this particular genre (some would say subgenre) of horror films.

Horror is huge. HUGE. You could be a U.S. horror fan and go your whole life never seeing anything disturbing in this kind of rape-incest way and not even really KNOWING about this type of horror film.

I'm reminded of some old black and white zombie comics I read. At first I was all 'Yay, zombies' and I knew some people would die. Because, yanno, zombies. But when a woman and an unfortunate sharp object are lovingly detailed in slo-mo, I went and found something else to read.

So, yeah.

It's all fun and games until it takes seventeen billion panels to put someone's eye out.
