Mar. 27th, 2004 07:57 pmBefore I ask yet another "Which song reminds you of ..." yadda yadda music cakes, this has been bugging me forever and a day.
Remember that show they used to have on MTV, where they'd show a bunch of people new videos and they got to vote which ones sucked and which ones rocked? I saw the video for "My Heart Will Go On" on that show for the very first time, which was kind of the whole reason I loved it ... because the losing videos, some of which deserved to get into rotation, faded away when they were actually pretty good. (EDIT: I just realized saying it like that makes it look like I liked that video. Er, no.)
There's one I remember specifically that I died laughing at but never saw again. I could swear it was a song by Goldfinger, and the video featured a puppet alien attacking what I assume to be the band as they ran through a space station, a la Alien. I remember loving the song, but I can't remember for the life of me which song it was. Please tell me it's ringing a bell for someone else, because this has been bugging me for years.
So anyway, the music question. Let's say I were compiling a music mix called "Soundtrack for the Apocalypse" in some strange alternate dimension where I'm completely and totally obsessed with the end of the world. (As opposed to this one.) Which songs do you think would make good additions to the mix?
And also, what are your favorite cover songs?
EDIT: You know, I thought I liked "When the Man Comes Around" by Johnny Cash when it played over the opening credits of "Dawn of the Dead" with all the riots and fires and death and whatnot, but now that I've listened to it over and over again for the past ten minutes or so, I think I'm in love. *swoons*

Date: 2004-03-27 07:00 pm (UTC)I'm deliberately putting a polka on my Armageddon mix. Oh, jeez, there's something seriously wrong with me.

Date: 2004-03-27 06:44 pm (UTC)Other decent covers: both the Travis and the Ahmet/Dweezil Zappa versions of "... Baby One More Time", the Ozzy Osbourne version of "Stayin' Alive", the Red Hot Chili Peppers version of "Havana Affair" and "Higher Ground", Rollins Band's version of "Ghost Rider", NIN's covers of "Dead Souls" and "Supernaut", Megadeth's version of "No More Mister Nice Guy"... I could go on for days...
As for Apocolypse music, try the song "Turn Back Time" from the movie End of Evangelion. If you're familiar with the movie (and the series leading up to it), you know why.

Date: 2004-03-27 06:22 pm (UTC)End of the world music? Hmm. Hmm. Part of me wants it to be very techno-y, part of me wants solemn and quiet music. Let's say part Crystal Method, part quiet Modest Mouse/Nada Surf ("Neither heaven nor space" would be nice.) Yeah. That'll do.

Date: 2004-03-27 07:49 pm (UTC)1999, by Prince. I mean, seriously. Listen to those lyrics.
I was dreaming when I wrote this, forgive me if it goes astray-
but when I woke up this morning, thought this morning was Judgment Day.
The sky was all purple, there were people running everywhere
Tried to run from my destruction- you know, I didn't even care...
... well, that bomb has gotta fall, we could all die any day
But before I let that happen, I'll dance my life away!
On the not-happy-bouncy front:
The Final Countdown, by Europe; London Calling, by the Clash (admittedly this is more Soundtrack To A Nuclear Postapocalyptic Movie, but still); Land of Confusion, by Genesis.

Date: 2004-03-27 08:01 pm (UTC)Oh, almost forgot. Back to the days of Vietnam for 'Eve of Destruction', by Barry McGuire, or possibly 'Ball of Confusion' by the Temptations, although my father considers that to be his generation's "We Didn't Start The Fire" rather than an end of the world song. There is also U2's 'Until the End of the World', but that's not really about the end of the world, so.

Get Off - Dandy Warhols
Covers-
Burning Down The House - Tom Jones and The Cardigans
Creep - Afghan Whigs (cover of the TLC song, not Radiohead.)

The button has been pressed.
The radio just let us know
that this is not a test....
What a crazy fluke!
We're gonna get nuked
on this jolly holiday!
My favorite cover song: "The Gummi Bears Theme Song" by Throwing Toasters.

Date: 2004-03-28 06:26 pm (UTC)Apocalyptic songs: I'd have to recommend Night on Bald Mountain (Mussorgsky); or the Mephisto Waltz (Listz); or In the Hall of the Mountain King (Grieg).
As far as covers go: Rob Zombie's Brickhouse 2003; Hendrix's Johnny B. Goode; Bina Mistry's Hot Hot Hot, from the Bend It Like Beckham soundtrack; that bluegrass cover of Gin and Juice by The Gourds.
I don't know if this is your kind of music, but--
Date: 2004-03-28 09:08 pm (UTC)quick cash-in for courtneygreatest hits]) and "Fuckin' Up" by Pearl Jam (originally by Neil Young; best version is on their Live on Two Legs album).Dave Matthews Band doing Bob Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower" isn't too bad, either. (Jimi Hendrix does a mean version, too.)

New Found Glory, "My Heart Will Go On"
Reel Big Fish, "Take On Me"
KMFDM, "Material Girl"
Dropkick Murphys, "The Rocky Road to Dublin" (Does a punk version of an Irish traditional tune strictly count as a cover?)
Tori Amos, "Do It Again," "Raining Blood"
Snake River Conspiracy, "lovesong"
Fiona Apple, "Across the Universe"
Nitocris, "All My Loving"
Genitorturers, "I Touch Myself"
I have entire CDs burned with nothing but covers. I swear this list could be really, really long, but I'll stop here.
