Before I ask yet another "Which song reminds you of ..." yadda yadda music cakes, this has been bugging me forever and a day.

Remember that show they used to have on MTV, where they'd show a bunch of people new videos and they got to vote which ones sucked and which ones rocked? I saw the video for "My Heart Will Go On" on that show for the very first time, which was kind of the whole reason I loved it ... because the losing videos, some of which deserved to get into rotation, faded away when they were actually pretty good. (EDIT: I just realized saying it like that makes it look like I liked that video. Er, no.)

There's one I remember specifically that I died laughing at but never saw again. I could swear it was a song by Goldfinger, and the video featured a puppet alien attacking what I assume to be the band as they ran through a space station, a la Alien. I remember loving the song, but I can't remember for the life of me which song it was. Please tell me it's ringing a bell for someone else, because this has been bugging me for years.

So anyway, the music question. Let's say I were compiling a music mix called "Soundtrack for the Apocalypse" in some strange alternate dimension where I'm completely and totally obsessed with the end of the world. (As opposed to this one.) Which songs do you think would make good additions to the mix?

And also, what are your favorite cover songs?

EDIT: You know, I thought I liked "When the Man Comes Around" by Johnny Cash when it played over the opening credits of "Dawn of the Dead" with all the riots and fires and death and whatnot, but now that I've listened to it over and over again for the past ten minutes or so, I think I'm in love. *swoons*

I think any "Soundtrack for the Apocalypes" needs a polka by Brave Combo. Just because.

You know what? I downloaded a few songs just to see, and "In Heaven There Is No Beer" could totally work for what I'm going for.

I'm deliberately putting a polka on my Armageddon mix. Oh, jeez, there's something seriously wrong with me.

Uh, let's see. Can't even begin to think of mass-destruction songs - Oh. Am MORON. "It's the End of the World and We Know It." DUR. *facepalm* Cover songs? Joan Jett did a really amazing cover of "Wild Thing" for the 80s movie Major League that I kinda like better than the original. A bit easier to dance around in the underwear to. And Concrete Blonde did a cover of Leonard Cohen's "Everybody Knows" for the Pump Up the Volume soundtrack. That, at least, is available at www.yourmp3.net

Help any? Or...entertain? Or whatever?

Don Henley did a cover of "Everybody Knows" for his greatest hits CD several years ago.

Other decent covers: both the Travis and the Ahmet/Dweezil Zappa versions of "... Baby One More Time", the Ozzy Osbourne version of "Stayin' Alive", the Red Hot Chili Peppers version of "Havana Affair" and "Higher Ground", Rollins Band's version of "Ghost Rider", NIN's covers of "Dead Souls" and "Supernaut", Megadeth's version of "No More Mister Nice Guy"... I could go on for days...

As for Apocolypse music, try the song "Turn Back Time" from the movie End of Evangelion. If you're familiar with the movie (and the series leading up to it), you know why.

Bow Wow Wow's cover of "I Want Candy".

Favorite cover song--Sneaker Pimp's cover of Prodigy's "Firestarter." Totally different, amazingly cool.

End of the world music? Hmm. Hmm. Part of me wants it to be very techno-y, part of me wants solemn and quiet music. Let's say part Crystal Method, part quiet Modest Mouse/Nada Surf ("Neither heaven nor space" would be nice.) Yeah. That'll do.

I think a soundtrack to Apocalypse should consist of overly happy bouncy pop. I might be unique in that asessment.

Date: 2004-03-27 06:56 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] apocalypsos.livejournal.com
No, I'd agree with that assessment. Now I just need to find more bouncy pop songs about the extinction of the human race. I can think of lots of bouncy pop songs that might inspire armageddon, but you'd be amazed how few boy bands and pop princesses choose to sing about the End of Days.

99 Luftballons by Nena, or the English version, 99 Red Balloons. Sounds all bouncy cheerful and then you listen to the words.

1999, by Prince. I mean, seriously. Listen to those lyrics.

I was dreaming when I wrote this, forgive me if it goes astray-
but when I woke up this morning, thought this morning was Judgment Day.
The sky was all purple, there were people running everywhere
Tried to run from my destruction- you know, I didn't even care...
... well, that bomb has gotta fall, we could all die any day
But before I let that happen, I'll dance my life away!

On the not-happy-bouncy front:

The Final Countdown, by Europe; London Calling, by the Clash (admittedly this is more Soundtrack To A Nuclear Postapocalyptic Movie, but still); Land of Confusion, by Genesis.

A friend of mine defines our generation as 'people who, without stopping to think, can name either four hair metal bands or four post-New Wave songs about nuclear war'...

Oh, almost forgot. Back to the days of Vietnam for 'Eve of Destruction', by Barry McGuire, or possibly 'Ball of Confusion' by the Temptations, although my father considers that to be his generation's "We Didn't Start The Fire" rather than an end of the world song. There is also U2's 'Until the End of the World', but that's not really about the end of the world, so.

Well if you're thinking 99 Red Balloons, the Goldfinger cover (cover! bonus points!) is completely awesome. Heck, Goldfinger does awesome covers in general. Just about any song. Also, Me First and the Gimme Gimmes. Especially Leaving on a Jet Plane and Phantom of the Opera. Because I'm a dork like that.

That show ROCKED, though I don't remember that video in particular. I do always remember the video for God Lives Underwater being on there.

Apocalypse-
The Terrible Secret of Space - The Laziest Men On Mars (not exactly apocalyptic, but robots arguing and killing innocents in the process!)
King of Silence - Cibo Matto
Get Off - Dandy Warhols

Covers-
Burning Down The House - Tom Jones and The Cardigans
Creep - Afghan Whigs (cover of the TLC song, not Radiohead.)
C*m On Feel The Noize - Bran Van 3000

OMG, I totally remember that God Lives Underwater video! The entire group who was voting either hated it or loved it, but they were all grossed out, and I actually went out and bought the album because of that video.

I remember loving that video and thinking how cool the song was. As I am a goldfish, I promptly forgot about it until a few months ago, forgot about it again, and just remembered it now. Great song, though. Must listen to it now.

End of the world music: "Politik", Coldplay. "Aerodynamic", Daft Punk (instrumental, but it's got the electric guitar going very end-of-the-world-ish), and "One of These Mornings", Moby. None of those are really apocalyptic, but hey, I was stuck for ideas.

Covers: "This Charming Man", Death Cab for Cutie. Kicks ass. "I Touch Myself", The Bens or Eve 6.

End-of-theworld tunes --Zager and Evans' "In The Year 2525 (Exordium & Terminus)" cause it doesn't get more poppy than that, can you say 69?

And Neil Young's "On the Way Home".

As covers go, I'll sell your soul for the Offspring's rendition of "Feelings." *eg*

"Christmas At Ground Zero" by Weird Al. :)

It's Christmas at Ground Zero.
The button has been pressed.
The radio just let us know
that this is not a test....

What a crazy fluke!
We're gonna get nuked
on this jolly holiday!

My favorite cover song: "The Gummi Bears Theme Song" by Throwing Toasters.

I always wanted to do a mix of end-of-the-world songs, and call it Apocalypso. Alas, I just can't think of that many. Will you post the list when you're done?

Apocalyptic songs: I'd have to recommend Night on Bald Mountain (Mussorgsky); or the Mephisto Waltz (Listz); or In the Hall of the Mountain King (Grieg).

As far as covers go: Rob Zombie's Brickhouse 2003; Hendrix's Johnny B. Goode; Bina Mistry's Hot Hot Hot, from the Bend It Like Beckham soundtrack; that bluegrass cover of Gin and Juice by The Gourds.
From: [identity profile] finnystix.livejournal.com
My two favorite cover songs ever are "The Man Who Sold the World" by Nirvana (originally David Bowie; you can find it on both Unplugged in New York and Nirvana [quick cash-in for courtney greatest hits]) and "Fuckin' Up" by Pearl Jam (originally by Neil Young; best version is on their Live on Two Legs album).

Dave Matthews Band doing Bob Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower" isn't too bad, either. (Jimi Hendrix does a mean version, too.)

Favorite cover tunes

When moose_y mentioned Pearl Jam, I just had to mention their cover of "It's Okay" by Dead Moon. Then there's Johnny Cash's version of "One", which kinda freaked me out, but in a good way.

Oh, geeze, I collect covers. I would fear to name my faves, but right off the top of my head:

Veruca Salt, "My Sharona"
New Found Glory, "My Heart Will Go On"
Reel Big Fish, "Take On Me"
KMFDM, "Material Girl"
Dropkick Murphys, "The Rocky Road to Dublin" (Does a punk version of an Irish traditional tune strictly count as a cover?)
Tori Amos, "Do It Again," "Raining Blood"
Snake River Conspiracy, "lovesong"
Fiona Apple, "Across the Universe"
Nitocris, "All My Loving"
Genitorturers, "I Touch Myself"

I have entire CDs burned with nothing but covers. I swear this list could be really, really long, but I'll stop here.
