“Be a dear and give us a bit of privacy, would you, petal?”
Everett stared down at Morris as though he'd suddenly sprouted horns and a tail, an expression Nicola remembered quite vividly from its original appearance on Victor's face when she had been the one to sprout horns and a tail. “Petal?”
Morris graced him with a beatific smile and said, “My apologies. I know you dislike that particular nickname, poodle,” before giving Everett's hand a loving pat.
Everett's frown deepened as he gently dislodged his hand from Morris's grasp. “Morris, you remember that discussion we had about pet names?”
Morris's smile drooped. “That I'll know I've gone too far when I start using actual pets for names?”
Everett nodded.
The only response Morris gave to that was a dismissive shrug.
Everett sighed as he folded his newspaper. “I really hope you're not like this every time we have guests.”

Also, before I pictured Morris speaking to someone in this book and casually referring to Vera as his stepdaughter, and I couldn't stop for long enough to figure out whether or not it was in character because I was too busy making "awwwwwwww" sounds.
(To be fair, it's not like I'm marrying them off in the book or anything, and Morris would be the first one to acknowledge that if Vera heard him call her that she'd tip a pot of tea over his head. Still. AWWWW. Hee.)
